Re: 72 c-10 shorty

heres the rusty beginnings! this was given to me by a friend years ago and has just sat on the back burner. Moneys the biggest factor this time around, so I will be spending carefully. I already had all the cab patchs including new front fender patchs, so my inital money out so far is pretty small.

Re: 72 c-10 shorty

I had the rally wheels kicking around and thought I might as well sandblast and clean them up for now.

Re: 72 c-10 shorty

I had a young apprentice from work come out and help me tear it all down. as he worked on the cab, I had another friend whos a ticketed welder come over and shorten the frame. the cab floor was solid, but the corners and rockers were gone. oh and of course the cab braces!

Re: 72 c-10 shorty

heres the frame being shortened, blasted and painted. I set the cab on to get a little look. I used the torch to lower the springs just to get a feel for the look im after. will be installing new springs, or may do bags not sure at this point. wanted a truck I could share with my father that he would like to drive, so not to sure about the airride idea.

Re: 72 c-10 shorty

got the bottom of the cab and firewall painted and new mounts installed on the frame. had towed the frame over to a friends to install the new motor and trans. rebuilt a 69 350 and a 700r4. not into used engines and trans. just found that its easier to do it once and only once. anyway heres some picts.

Re: 72 c-10 shorty

got the motor and trans into the frame and got the cab bolted back down. love the look of the old corvette valve covers. Ive got some shorty headers, but want it to be functionable and original looking so Im going to run the stock rams horns.I need to find a oil filler spout for the intake, the valve covers have no holes. frames alittle muddy from the tow job to my buddies and back.

I love this... It's exactly what I will be doing to my truck soon. What type of metal and welder do I need to replacing the cab corners? Yes, I am completely new at this stuff...

Re: 72 c-10 shorty

I had bought three parts trucks from a guy years ago to get this box. there was so little damage and no rear rust so I had to have it. gave away the parts trucks. heres some picts of the box cut.

Re: 72 c-10 shorty

I like how you shortened the front of the bed. I've seen how some guys take out 12 inches somewhere in the middle of the front between the frt of the bed and rear wheel. Why didn' anyone else do it this way? It looks like it saves on alot of extra work? Its funny, I have a 56 I'm working on and a 68 gmc that I just made a short bed. Keep up the good work.

a small mig welder will do just fine for the cab corners and rockers. Ive always used gas with my mig, but I see some guys are doing it with flux core wire. gas is just so much nicer to use. the cab corners I have seen come in different thicknesses. some are really nice stampings and others not so much. so be careful and buy the thicker metal ones. way better pieces. any other questions feel free to ask.good luck

Re: 72 c-10 shorty

Here are a couple of pics of my trucks. 68 GMC, and a 56 Chev. I'm trying to keep the 68 short and sweet, I have an 87 tbi sub that I'm using parts for, and the 56 have a rack and pinion on a camaro subfame, 4 wheel disk brakes, and airbags on all 4. I have a 95 LT1 Caprice I'll use the parts for on the 56. Scott

Re: 72 c-10 shorty

well its been a short while, but I managed to get out to the shop for a few hours here and there this week and got busy on the body work. I do bodywork all week at work, so I really have a hard time getting excited about doing any mud work even on my own. from metal to primer is not an enjoyable time for me. lol
