What is this stepside worth?
Hey guys,
I am a 65 owner, I just got call from a mutual friend, he has a 68 stepside "farm truck" with 5 lug, straight 6, column 3speed, disk front brakes, dented but running, surface rust only-North California truck. Pics are coming.... He wants $400, which is what the toyota dealership is offering on trade. Thing is has licence current and I could drive it today. I would give this to my son to learn driving (turns 16 December), then he can learn body work after he gets all the wrecks and fender-bending out of his system... Question, is this worth money? Thanks, Steve |

Re: What is this stepside worth?
Really tough to say without pictures, but a running and driving truck probably is worth AT LEAST $400. I don't think you can go wrong.
But we do need pictures!!

Re: What is this stepside worth?
I don't think you can go wrong with a licensed legal driveable truck for 4 bills.Anything else you would buy your son would cost more than that and could carry more people(teen distractions)and probably wouldn't stand up to teen driving as well.

Re: What is this stepside worth?
So buy it all ready. Your son will have to get used to the non power steering and brakes. Unless that was all updated with the 5 lug swap. Wish I could find one like that for my 17 year old son.

Re: What is this stepside worth?
I used to work at a car dealership. Our used car appraiser always said, "Any running vehicle is worth $400." Buy it.

Re: What is this stepside worth?
What kind of gas milage should I expect? My 65 305/700R4 gets terrible MPG (15-ish), but this thing looks a lot lighter...Also, straight 6 should be a little better...?

Re: What is this stepside worth?
15mpg terrible for a truck??? Many of us would love to get that, I'm in 10mpg territory on my c30 dually with a sbc350 /turbo 350.
$400 is an absolute incredible steal for a running truck, I can do a quick tuneup and craig's list just about anything that runs and drives for $1,000 around here. If I was out there I'd buy that truck in a heartbeat. |

Re: What is this stepside worth?
man if that truck was in Georgia, I would have bought it already. I bought a 70 stepside 2 months ago that was basically a frame, bare cab, and bed for $300. $400 for a running, driving truck is a steal! Buy it!

Re: What is this stepside worth?
Not that it matters, but that truck in a 71 or 72, unless the front sheet metal has been changed. Make sure you get the correct title.

Re: What is this stepside worth?
I am not familiar with this body style, only the 60-66. Does the the year (68 VS 70) inpact the value? Is one more desirable than the other?
Also, is a fleet short or step short more desirable? Valuable? |

Re: What is this stepside worth?
No more than $500 with a clean title. It looks like a lot of work and a lot of money. I would hold out for something better myself.

Is that including the double Bungee cord battery hold-down option?

I think that would be a great Bonding experiance for your Son & you! My story goes....... when our son was 15 years old, my Wife purchased a 71 Camaro from the original Owner for $1300.00. It had a Straight 6 and a 3 speed manual on the Floor. Original AM radio to boot! I at the time, had a 70 Camaro with a 383 Stroker in it. My Wife restored hers to stock and I made mine into a Hot Rod. We would show them at local Car Shows. After the restoration was finished, my Wife offered it to our Son for FREE. Beautiful new paint , restored ect. Our Son said, "No thanks Mom...it's only got a 6 cyl...I want a V8" Needless to say, we sold it 6 months later for $4400.00 to pay the closing costs on a new House. That was 17 years ago,and my Son to this day, repeatedly kicks himself in the A$$ for passing that car up. Lifes lessons learned the hard way.

Re: What is this stepside worth?
Rear fenders alone are worth $400. Buy it or regret it later.
