Charging System

Hello everyone, got a problem with my charging on the truck. 12v from batt to alternator. This is a external voltage regulator which has 12v. Before you could advance the gas pedal and the alternator would pick it up and start charging. Could it be the wrong alternator pulley, too small of one? Right now whether it is at idle or above the alternator will not put out no more than what the battery voltage is. Should I just change the alternator to an internal soild state alternator? Thanks

Best investment you will do to the truck for long term use.
If the truck is a everyday driver it needs the internal alternator for sure.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Charging System

There is a way to test the charging system and determine if the problem is the voltage regulator or the alternator, however if you do have a bad part (whichever one) and you arent dead set on keeping it original I would install a one wire alternator and be done with it. You should be able to get one for around $60.00
good luck

Re: Charging System

Heres a couple good threads on alternator conversion, there is also an article in the FAQ section. As posted unless your going for an "origional" truck there is no reason not to convert to an internally regulated alternator. If you convert to a 3 wire then the pic in post 22 ( bottom link i posted below) shows the mod to the wires going to the external regulater harness plug. Both the 1 wire and 3 wire work but there are some discussions on these boards and links posted as to why a 3 wire is better..

Re: Charging System

You said before, did this non charging start with some component change or just out of the blue? If out of the blue, you can take your alt to any auto store and have it teated. If it's putting out voltage your regulator is bad. Right now, assuming your gage is right, you have a failed alt or voltage regulator. I would first clean and reattach the battery cables and the connections at the alt and voltage regulator.
