I'd like to think that going big on CI would be the best bet for torque and power. I dropped a BB LS6 in my truck with stock numbers being 475HP and 525 lb.ft. of twist. Something about the sound of solid lifters, but also I have stock exhaust manifolds and 2.5" dual and a 650cfm holley on it...mated to a beefed 700R4. New Ceramic Sanderson BB4 headers and new piping is going in next. I imagine that would push it to over 500 and 550.

It is my daily driver but 91/93 octane gas at 11 mpg does get expensive. A TPI unit would probably improve that to 14/15 mpg. But the 7.4 LS6 is less expensive than the 502 or the 572 motors.

Just my 0.02.

Im just about to start pulling my truck apart and have been researching this exact topic.
I live so far from a normal wrecker that used is not really an option.
My current setup is a mild 350 which is (so I was told by the shop) about 290 hp.
Im wanting to get into the 450 - 600hp range as well but I would have to ship a crate engine here to accomplish that.

What I can find is anything dressed north of 450hp runs in the 6k range. After shipping, duty etc etc Its getting real expensive.
Any price I can find on a 572 is 13k+

Add to that a trans that can handle the power and it jumps another 1k - 2k. depending on model. The 700r4 in my 84 Camaro blew up the sun gear so thats not something Im looking to do again.

Im considering a blower on the 350 I got and leave it at that until I win the lottery or sell my kids. So going in the opposite direction of you.

Aside from the tranny, my motor cost me a bout $200. Yep...$200.

Thing is I bought a truck with it already in it and swapped motors. Resold the thruck and viola! I've got a crate 454 LS6 with 5000 miles on it. There are many ways to skin a cat and I thought I'd take the expense(getting torn up by the cat) out of it.

if you go with a blower make sure you use the right carb. when i first got my truck it had the wrong carb on it and ran like crap plus i think it hurt the motor alittle. holley has that carb and it works with there blowers very well.

I just got my BB punched out to a 496 on super unleaded and it was dynoed at 623 hp and 690 lbs of torque....and it ended up costing over $7000.....

I think the key terms here are 600 hp and streetable.My opinion on that would be a big inch LS and turbo.Like stated above the LS would need some upgrades but if you designed it for the turbo then it should be reliably streetable,have plenty of power and only need to stop at every other gas station rather than be followed by a tanker.I think with that much hp you will probably have to adress tranny(6 speed auto should help driveability and milage) and traction issues.

Why not put a blower on a 5.3/ 6.0. They're out there stock with mid levels of boost making good power and reliable, drivable and not too big of a bite in the wallet. You could upgrade internals later if you wanted to raise boost levels up as well.
