Re: 57 cab removal help

If the steering column on a GMC is anything like a chevy of same era, the column and the gearbox are integral and must come out together.

Re: 57 cab removal help

Steering column comes out by removing the steering wheel, bracket under the dash, cover at the floor, column shift handle (if 3 on tree), pull the pitman arm, unbolt the steering box from the frame and pull it out of the frame, pull the box and column out thru the firewall from the firewall side.

You can use the stock column by cutting it loose from the box and adding a bearing at the bottom (available online from vendors). The bottom of the shaft needs modified too I think. There have been a couple of threads on here with pictures, a search should find them.

Hey Orrie, I remember seeing that bearing for sale somewhere but can't remember where. Do you know who sells it?
Thanks!

Re: 57 cab removal help

I got mine from Tucker's. They called it a Column Saver kit when I bought it.
