what year is my truck?

I got an Old Navy truck and am not exactly sure what year it is. It a GMC with a chevy frontend. Has a 53 and older dash, 6 lug, the bed is 17" deep and 89" long and has flat top rails. It does not have a crotch cooler vent on the drivers side and has push button door handles. I am thinking around a 53 but Im not 100%. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: what year is my truck?

I read a thread once, can't remember where, that those old navy trucks were pieced together from different year trucks. So could be any year. Looks like 52 an up cab.

Re: what year is my truck?

If the doors have any thing to do with the year it is pre 52 because there are no wing windows, and i think flat top rail boxes are from a 54, so kalirodding must be right about them pieceing them together

Re: what year is my truck?

Yep. You have a kluge. 54+ bed (looks like a 3600 based on length), 52-54 doors due to the push buttons, no vent windows probably means they didn't put them in but you can check for the track and the plate they would have bolted to. 51-3 cab (no crotch cooler). 47-53 front fenders. A repop 47-53 grille. That's what Old Navy did. Is there a VIN? If not, how do you know it is a GMC cab? The dash parts interchange, too!

Oh, are there ribs on the inside of the bed that flow like the fender? If not, it's a newer bed, too.

And 51 would have had vent windows, just turn down handles as well.

Re: what year is my truck?

Post more pics and we should be able to help.
The problem with trying to figure out Old Navy trucks is they used whatever they could get their hands on to use. You could have body panels and chassis parts from all years. If you have the vin, that's the only way to tell what year the cab is.

Re: what year is my truck?

Thanks for the help guys,

It did have vent windows at one time but the doors are basically gutted now so the tracks and braces are gone.
The steering wheel read GMC is did the dash.
I will have to check on the ribs on the inside of the bed right now it has a big wooden box built in, to hold clothes and stuff.
I had the law come out and run a VIN verification on it and everything was clear so I should have no problem getting the mix breed registered when the time comes.

Re: what year is my truck?

You know...Old Navy sure did us a favor by using these trucks. I, for the most part, am the only " old truck" guy in my family and circle of friends, and when I show pics of my build, everyone, espescially the younger generation, says" Hey...an old Navy truck"
Sorry to hijack! Good luck on your build!

Re: what year is my truck?

You should look at my 47 gmc build. On there someone posted all the difference and helped me identify my truck. Very good identification and education. If you get a chance you should take pictures of the radiator, shroud, opened hood, and front grill. This is a conversion I am planning on doing on mine.

Re: what year is my truck?

It looks like either a 52 or 53 with a 54 bed. If you have the vin number off the cab you can do a bit of hunting and track that down to the specific year.
Here is one link that might help. http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/page0009.html

Another thing, the cab shows to be GMC but what frame does it have? You can tell that by the front crossmember's appearance.

This is a GMC front crossmember. The frame had tube shocks but i don't know what year they started using them.

This is a Chevy front crossmember. This one is in my 51 1-1/2 ton but the appearance is basically the same on a half ton. This one still has the front motor mount bolted to it.

Re: what year is my truck?

Mr 48's web site is a good one to look at with the vin number. That's the one I looked at for my 2 GMC's. It's a little hard to read and understand but it will give you the year and model.
