4x4 warning light question

I'm having trouble with the search function on this board so I hope it's okay to ask.

The 4x4 warning light came on in my 2001 Silverado the other day. At the same time the lights beside the 4x2, 4x4 Hi and 4x4 Lo were flashing as though it were having trouble picking one. It seemed to continue driving fine. I shut it off and started it again and it kept doing it. I re-started it again and everything went back to normal.

Have you guys seen this before? Is it an easy diagnosis or should I take it to a shop? Let me know if you need more info.

Re: 4x4 warning light question

simular things have happened with my 02. It seems to do it when on long trips but it always seems to drive fine and the 4 wheel part continues to work (I know cause I would have been stuck if it wasn't.) By the end of the trip it clears up and my mechanics say they cant find any codes that have been set. Go figure?

Re: 4x4 warning light question

I read about similar issues being traced back to the 4x4 switch on the dash.

Re: 4x4 warning light question

It's most likely the dash switch. Mine did what y'all are describing on and off for a couple years. It finally got to where it would come on and stay on a lot. About 3 months ago I ordered a new switch from GMpartsdirect.com, I think it was 45 or 50 bucks shipped, about 5 minutes to change and my Service 4WD light hasn't come on since.

This was a common enough issue, the part was remade. If you pull your part, type in the part # in the website above, it will most likely say, "part # blah blah is no longer available and is replaced with part # blah blah".

Hope that helps. For $50 it's cheaper than having a dealer even look at it
