Rear axle removal

Hey guys, need a little help here. I have my 69' C10 on the jack stands and I'm about to remove the entire rear end off the frame. I've been told to use the spring compressor, I've been told that I don't need one.

I know some of you guys are great in giving step by step process for different tasks. So here I am asking for help for removing my axle. I know it's simple enough and straight forward, but I don't want to overlook anything and get a spring drilled into my noggin.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Rear axle removal

The rear axle as in the chunk and all?

Soak EVERY NUT IN PB BLASTER

Go back inside to get a snack or something

loosen U bolt nuts (will need HUGE braker bar/pipe)

Take panhard bar off

Take brakeline loose from the front of the T fitting on the pass. side of axle

Take parking brake calbes loose

Loosen coil spring perch on the bottoms (I left the tops alone when I did mine, just let em hang

Thats it I think, Good luck

You ROCK Old Blue, thanks! I was thinking that's all there was to it, but better to be safe then sorry. It's my first frame off, so it's a learning process.

Thanks again, and I'm sure I'll be picking your brain again if you don't mind.

Cheers,
Brian

Re: Rear axle removal

Yep, if the axle is hanging (frame on jackstands), then there is no tension on the springs. Just put a jack under the pumpkin and take everything loose then lower the jack and the rear will come down. penetrating oil....and lot's of it is your friend here, the longer it soaks the better. Also when you put it back together use new U-bolts and nuts. Good luck, and eat your wheaties, you'll need the strength!

Re: Rear axle removal

Come back on Sunday and we'll tell you how to remove the u-bolts that are rusted into the trailing arms.

Good luck.

Re: Rear axle removal

Thanks for the tips guys! It dropped right out, and after fighting with it for a while with a 1" impact and a 5' breaker bar, I decided to work smarter. I decided just cut off the U-bolts.
