Re: Saved a rare one!

Here's a possible answer on the paint. In 1969we bought a new GMC truck that had a custom paint color FROM the factory. I don't remember the paint code, but it was ordered that way. If you wanted to order a new GMC, you filled out a two sided order form at the dealership and just waited for your truck to be built. Anyway, custom color paint was an available option. Check remote areas on the trucks body to see if that color is the original paint and then you will know.

Re: Saved a rare one!

The special paint code could be diciphered if you were able to access some COPO records.

Back in the day, you could specify a paint color and pay the minimal upcharge. If it hasn't been repainted, you might be able to buff out a spot and check that spot against some color charts. I'd start with some GM charts, because it makes sense (to me) that it would be a GM color. For instance, I had a '64 Corvair Spyder convertible. It was turquoise in/out, with a white top. The guy I sold it to is a paint/body guy, working for Pittsburgh Paints (Automotive). Anyway, he selected the same color, but from the Cadillac charts. It has more metallic in it; it seems that he called it a turquoise firemist.

By the same token, a friend of mine was really into '64 Ford Galaxies. He had 5 of them. One was a 4-dr sedan with swing-away steering and a special paint. He learned the history of the car that told the story of a secretary to the owner of the dealership, who special-ordered the car and had it shot with a Thunderbird yellow, instead of the Galaxie color.

Your special paint could be as simple as that.

Re: Saved a rare one!

Since it's a special paint there is no way to track the code. I can't really make it out in the picture. What would you call the color,or better yet, could you post a better picture? Maybe clean up a spot? Thanks for saving it. It's a very interesting one.

Is it a '69? Those are generic cab lights and the marker lamp option was probably the side markers if it's a '69.

Talking Re: Saved a rare one!

We got it home! Still in the trailer with no rear end under it.
Cab is very rusty but we got one that will work.
Chilli has org motor, trans and rear, we might get the motor but we have a good correct one for it if needed.
Frame is solid and complete...very nice.
Bed outer skins are very straight but rusty on the bottom.
Iner skins are rusty on driver side, not bad on pass side.
Bed floor (steel) is good and bad, full of parts, junk and leaves right now.
Rear end was a 3.07 posi. Odd for this truck?
Thought the buckets were sold but are still in it (brackets were sold) These appear to be early camaro or ? Very good condition!
Roof lights are International! Says right on the housing.
The things on the hood are custom vents!
2 of the headlights have triangles in the center.
That's all for now...Definitely worth saving!
Will post some picks tomorrow.

Re: Saved a rare one!

Here is a web site that has cataloged all the PPG paint codes. I looked up your truck and it is not listed so it must have been a special customer order. You can type in a new search and see if you find any other colors that may match.

Tim already mentioned this, but I'll go into a little more detail.
The option listed is for the side marker lights. In 68 and 69 the side markers were only reflectors unless the light option was ordered. This goes for all GM pick ups, short or long, step or fleet. If the truck had the Dual rear wheel option, then the roof mounted clearance lights, and the side marker lights were required per federal DOT regulations, and were not included in the cost of the DRW option, so they were required options at added cost.
IN 70, the side markers were included on all models.

Re: Saved a rare one!

the 2 headlights you mention are the original T3 lamps, common to still have the high beams even today. Repros are made now.
3.07 rear is standard with the big blocks in 1/2 ton trucks. Posi is somewhat uncommon with that ratio, and the books actually said it wasn't avalible, but seen many on here that had it as original.

Re: Saved a rare one!

If you can find or polish a spot somewhere on the truck, most paint suppliers have a camera that takes a pic of the paint and gives a very accurate reading of the color or closest possible match.

Re: Saved a rare one!

Here's some pics and info on this rare beast:
It still has the orig paint...maroon and ivory.
This thing was built and modified for long hauls, has a semi truck saddle tank in the bed plumbed thru a semi truck fuel filter.
Goose neck ball is still mounted to the bed floor.
Big 6 lug steel wheels and huge tires.
3.07 Posi for highway driving.
The hood vents are very well desiged to pull heat out of the engine bay during long halls. Not a cobbed up setup...designed by a real pro.
Heavy duty custom hitch mount built thru the the step bumper, very professionally done, also a custom hook setup on the front for winching it up onto a slant back transporter....like you would a Drag car back in the day.
Have not talked to the orig owner's son yet to see if his dad might have been employed by a FAMOUS LOCAL GAINSVILLE DRAG RACER but whoever put this thing together had a lot of money and alot of skill 40 years ago!
Being racers ourselves this would have been what we would have built to hall very expensive race cars across country as fast as possible...to the next National Event!
The paper trail chase begins shortly, first with the son then the Dealership (it's still there) and then maybe with SOMEONE FAMOUS who just happens to live about 45 miles from where this truck was found.
We will be unloading and cleaning the truck this weekend...may find some very interesting stuff under all that dirt.
Anybody have pics of Big Daddy's transporters from back then?
Thanks, Reno

Just doesn't sound like its setup too well for hauling. Thats geared pretty high and the big tires would hurt it even more. Also, its a 1/2 ton SWB without heavy springs- not what I'd pull a trailer with.

not saying it wasn't used for that, just not the best choice if it were.

Anyways, I cant wait to hear more of the story and see more pics! Awesome save. At least you have the SPID photographed should you need to remake it.
