i do something like this as well..

while you're doing it... if you bend the ziptie around the "wrong" way, it doesnt ratchet.. so you can slip it open and shut while you move wires back and forth until you get your harness made.

ive redone a couple stock harnesses, and i found that using "reusable" colored zip ties this way really helped alot...
