Help me with 72 12-bolt parts #s

I have a 3.08 geared rearend out of a 72 c10 to swap into my 66.

But its been sitting for years.

First, does anyone have the part numbers for axle seals and bearings? Im assuming it needs replaced.

Also, Ive never torn into a rearend, so can anyone spell out how to go about it...?

Id like to get this together soon so I can swap it in. At 3.39 a gallon and climbing..
I want it in asap

I hate this when someone does it to me, but I suck at typing so I will direct you to this thread, I think it will help you.

Re: Help me with 72 12-bolt parts #s

Thanks Clyde

I guess what Im saying/asking is, does everyone feel I need to replace the axle seals since its been sitting so long?
i havnt even checked it to see if theres fluid inside...been too cold out.

I dont want to completely rebuild it, just make is usable.
Its just a stock 283, granny 4spd truck, not a hotrod.

Re: Help me with 72 12-bolt parts #s

If it were me, I would open it up and drain the fluid, look around it and see if you see any kind of shavings or damage, I would redo the brakes and wheel cylinders while it is off the road too, just for safety sake. That will tell you if the axle is leaking and if you have any real issues. if all looks good I would drive it and see how it goes, taking it easy at first.

I always inspect and or redo the brakes on any project b4 I drive it.

In addition to what Clyde mentioned.

I would pull the axles out and inspect the axle bearing surface for pitting. Also take a look at the axle bearings themselves to see if there is any pitting. I would just go ahead and replace the seals as they are cheap.

Re: Help me with 72 12-bolt parts #s

Thanks guys.

Is it as simple as pulling C-clips and pulling axles? Ive never had to tear into a rearend before.

Also, anyone know the part numbers for those seals, or the bearings for that matter incase I need them too...

Just tell them at the parts store that you need the bearings and seals for the truck the rear came from.
