Need help removing inner A/C box - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Not sure if it has a gasket that's really stuck or if the bolts pin it into the dash until they are removed. I know I'm being too gentle with it because I don't want to crack it. It's all in perfect shape so I hope to be able to keep it that way to recoup some of my vintage air investment

Any tips on removing it?

(the box on the right inside the glovebox area...)

Do you have the nuts off of the other side of of the firewall? Don't know if this pic will help or not.

Thanks for the pic. Yes, I have all the nuts off on the outside and the ones on the inside. All that's left is the bolts going through. I think it's item #2 in your picture (cement) holding it on now

Gently push on the studs from the other side before you get too crazy with a pry bar. Maybe spread across two with a hunk of 2x4 or similar tool.

You have to have the inner fender of to get the bottom bolt... Don't know if you do or not .

Thanks guys. I'll try the 2x4 across the studs tonight. My engine bay is empty with no inners. All firewall bolts are off...just three of the four studs left on. I got one off (by breaking the stud) only to find that it didn't make that corner loose

Good thing I have extra studs off other cases

I don't remember having any trouble with mine, although the "S" piece is also fragile.

Thing is, I don't need or intend to use the OEM AC on the new cab....just heat, which it already has.

I have the same problem. All the bolts and nuts are off, only the pin studs are left. The PO sheared the studs off flush with the firewall (see pic). Do you guys think it's the adhesive still holding it on? I'd rather be kicked in the jewels than tear up this box!

Its been a while since I converted to AC but being a good little German I kept track of details and took pictures.
The studs are "clip ons"...

So you pried the clips off and the studs came out? I tried this on one but couldn't get the clip to come off. Maybe a little PB Blaster and try again. Any more input would help.

I've been thinking....The studs are clip on and sheared off flush with the firewall then the only thing that could be holding it on is the cement. Is this correct?

Jonathan, I've had to pop them with my hand pretty good to get them to come off. If you have the outside box completely off and 2 bolts off from inside, it should come off. Good luck, Randy

Thanks Randy, I thought I was being too gentle....just wanted some reassurance before I got to tearing it up

I wanted to update this thread. I got the A/C box off. Hit it twice with both hands opened up like an open handed smack. It loosened up enough at that point for me to pull it out. No damage

Hope this helps someone else....and thanks for the pictures and info to everyone who posted

THanks for your input. Really that's probably the one biggest thing I've learned so far with these trucks...If something itsn't doing what it's supposed to it's usually that you're not hitting it or tugging on it hard enough
