My Pre-enjoyed 51 (OSK)

Well after 2 years of asking the 51 is now mine.

I have been living over on the 60-66 side of the forum for about the past year. (keeping one eye on the 47-55 happenings )

Drove it home about a week ago and couldn't be happier with the decision I had made. All 6 volt acc. work. 216-235?, 3 on the tree.

Previous owner replaced the clutch, master cylinder and all the brake lines about a year ago....

Just needs a good carb cleaning and accelerator pump (I think, tends to fall on it's face if you give it too much gas?) I have changed the plugs and oil, just waiting for carb kit!

A couple of pictures of "OLD RED"

Future Plans: Get some tags for it, and drive it all over GA!
(fix what breaks along the way!)

I'm sure I will have a few questions soon.... Already thought of a question.. Going to need tires soon and want something factory looking but not Bias ply.... What size is that and white wall or black wall? (current fronts are 205/75/15 rears 225/75/15)..Thanks

Re: My Pre-enjoyed 51 (OSK)

Looks like a pretty good truck. It is the 216 six cylinder. Good motor for crusing. Ill have to go look tomorrow, but I think the originals on my 51 were 16's ( dont quote me on that, Ill confirm later) but I do know they were taller than those you have now. Ill let you know

Re: My Pre-enjoyed 51 (OSK)

white walls look pretty goofy on a non lowered truck, in my opinion. Always liked the all black tires on stock height trucks.

as far as the stock tire size goes, head over to stovebolt.com - they have all that info over there.

Re: My Pre-enjoyed 51 (OSK)

It looks like you had the same style 15" wheels and caps I had on mine when I bought it. I did not like them and found out the hard way that the repro rings and caps I bought for the truck would not fit on the rims. I got lucky and found a good set of original rims and I had them sand blasted and completely powder coated. The rims cost me $100, blasting and powder coat was about $120, rings and hub caps $125, and new BFG's cost around $450. I think it looks better, rides better, and now all my tires hold air for less than $800.

I found this conversion chart helpful to determine wheel diameter:
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp and then picked a size close in diameter.

Some guys have used LT215/85R16. I Ended up buying LT225/75R-16's. You can buy a replica radial of the Bias ply tires with a white wall from Coker, but be ready to bend over for them cause they are pricey. Thats the reason I went with a standard BW truck radial.

Good luck. And post up some pics when you get something!

Here's a link to my tire thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=344549

Hey Kid, What, no details? I see new tires and green rims in that last photo and no info on what you went with, why the color? Fill us in.

I live in Kennesaw, and also have a five window. Mine is a 52 though. I would love to come by when I get back from Afghanistan, and look at your beauty. I too enjoy riding the classics. My 64 c-10 has been one of my favorites as far as factory ride.

Re: My Pre-enjoyed 51 (OSK)

I ended up just running a cheap set of 225 75 15 with hub caps that i believe are from a 67-70 truck? Very happy with the tire set up. Been playing around with the rim color. One side is like the original truck color green and the other is black.

Nice to see a survivor still running around! Must get a lot of attention.

A friend used to drive his old rusy 49 around his town and he got tired of everyone asking if he wanted to sell it for cheap so he put a "NOT For Sale" sign in it. Still didn't stop them for some reason?
