1972 chevy clutch problem

My 72 chevy has a sm465 w/205 t case. it has a newer crate motor put in a few years ago with less than 30k. i just bought it and the clutch never fulled disengages from the engine. to put it in gear sometimes i have to turn off the engine and put in gear, then start back up.

its a pain at stop lights because i have to pray i can get it in 2nd before i fully stopped or else i run into trouble. also shifting up is a real pain because it never fully disengages. also at lights when the clutch is too the floor, if i dont have the brake on, it will continue to move.

could it be a clutch problem or a linkage problem?

thanks in advance!

Re: 1972 chevy clutch problem

Have you tried adjusting the threaded rod that pushed the clutch fork?

Re: 1972 chevy clutch problem

ive taken a look at it and the rod is lengthened as long as it can go, it almost seems like its too short. it just started snowing again and i dont have a garage so I might just table this until spring or take it to a shop

Re: 1972 chevy clutch problem

hmm, something doesn't seem right. Typically I see plenty of adjustment left, so are you sure you have a complete linkage? Sounds funny, but there are a lot of little pieces involved. One or two pieces can be lost, and it can still be made to work.
Check out the diagram below, and see of you see anything different from your set up.

Thanks for the diagram. I'm away from my truck for a few weeks but I'll definitely compare what I have to the picture
