Junkyard find - 66 GMC 1 ton in Columbus, OH

Looking for 95 burb parts for my dad, I stumbled across a 66 GMC 1-ton?? shell at the pick n pull in columbus ohio on groveport road if anyone is looking for parts locally. it's fairly stripped down and has an inline 6 instead of the big block GMC V6 - either canadian truck, or not original engine, and sm 420 or 465 I would guess.
Very sad to see this one end up with this fate, as the chassis is real clean and all there, not rusty, had a real nice tubular steel flatbed with short stake sides and wood floor (for sale seperately now at entrance of yard). Floor pan was really rusted out, cab corners rusted out, but I snagged the fenders as they were almost totally rust free and mine are so full of bondo and flapping in the breeze down low from the inner bracing rotting.
Someone had already stripped the intake/carb, exhaust, distributor and ignition off of it, as well as the bench seat and rear cab glass (small window). Engine had a fairly recent coat of paint on it even and some new gaskets.
Worst part is that the junkyard forklift hauled the thing in a way that it CRUSHED in the rocker panels on both sides, along with the bottoms of both doors. Major bummer. Cab could be fixable, but what a shame! Vin # on tag by driver's feet was not readable, but rest of tag was.

EDIT: pics uploaded. This is all I have, and I was pointing at the one side cowl panel to text to my friend to look and see if mine was dented or if my door was where the dent was, in case you wondered! Both of those are there still, mine was just scuffed but dent was in my door.

Re: Junkyard find - 66 GMC 1 ton in Columbus, OH

Here's a few things I remember from looking at it:

- GMC specific hood with typical rust on the back sides by internal bracing, dent on pass. side, rust towards front of pass. side, turn signal lenses busted
- GMC dual headlight grill minus the lettering, slight bend where "G" of GMC attaches. white painted. I took the halogen beams and buckets.
-chassis and running gear look real good still, nice and clean frame painted black, very littleframe surface rust; rear end, brakes, suspension, and steering all there. drums up front of course, but easy swap to discs if you care. original single res. master cyl. still. Good chassis for someone looking for one as far as I can
- windshield, door glass and wing windows all there and not cracked.
- external door handles and internal door parts all there, door shells were bent by forklift. inside handles and cranks gone.
-instrument cluster bezel still there, indicator lenses are no good. GMC specific.
-deluxe heater still there, missing defrost lever on controls.
-GMC AM radio, no knob handles
-glove box door minus latch/lock, and ashtray door
-dome light lens broken
-lap belts there?
-good steering column and ignition switch, all other dash switches and horn missing knobs or broken. wiper switch may be good??
-SM420 or SM465 trans, clutch linkages there I think, but Z-bar/belcrank was just hanging there.
-inline 6 cylinder long block, fresh paint on it, no clue on condition. bellhousing to match it (not same as sbc???)
-FLOOR PAN HAS TALL TRANS HUMP THAT IS STILL GOOD, although edges are a little rusted, floormat area towards outsides of cabs is where the floor is totally shot.
-front bumper there but needs rechromed, I didn't notice any dents/bends
-all front sheetmetal there other than the fenders, but I took radiator mounting pieces and radiator as it was wider than my 62's which leaks, having this 66 re-cored.
-in cab gas tank looks good, although someone pulled the sending unit and left it just hanging there. gas cap is locked, no keys.
-there may be more good stuff than this, but that's all I remember off the top of my head.

I got the fuse box and main under dash wiring harness (everything permanently attached to fusebox), rust free
fenders!!!!, hood hinge springs, radiator and brackets, and instrument cluster. I think most of the engine compartment wiring was gone already. Going back maybe for maybe the headlight wiring harness and windshield wiper arms Tuesday.

Hope this can help someone locally.

Re: Junkyard find - 66 GMC 1 ton in Columbus, OH

Yard labeled it as a 1 ton, and looking at the giant rear leafs, I thought it probably was, but not sure now,, maybe 3/4 ton with A LOT of extra leafs? Looking at this picture: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...3&postcount=45 it definitely does not have that front suspension, and that is a 1 ton or more I would imagine. Maybe someone could glance at the back axle/brake setup in the photo and identify it. Could be axle and springs off 1 ton as well, with 3/4 ton front end?

Re: Junkyard find - 66 GMC 1 ton in Columbus, OH

It's fix-able for those who aren't having much luck finding a GMC hood. It's a shame the chassis and running gear are all in such nice looking shape but probably going to get crushed. Pains me to think of how many rustbelt project vehicles there are that people try to restore with frames that have swiss cheese sections, as this beauty sits there. Someone did at least a partial restoration to it maybe 15 or 20 years ago, as the whole frame was pretty much all painted black, engine had been cleaned up and painted as well. I woulda snagged that tranny if I didn't already have a sportier shifting saginaw 4 speed that I got for free from family...

Was going to convert a F*rd Tremec TKO-3550 5 speed to GM and swap it in, but the input shaft and retainer, Tremec to GM speedo adapter, and mid shift kit were gonna cost $$$, like $650. $150 for the ford to GM conversion parts. $675 5000 mile tranny.

Yeah, but my hood is in better shape. Just one dent by the passenger side turn signal.

SouthEast/Central part of town. Pick N Pull. I need to head back there as my wipers i just realized are no longer working, but still have to troubleshoot them. Was thinking of grabbing the steering column or maybe just the collar where mine has the 3 on the tree shifter, since I'm going to floor shift.

The hood will fit but the front edge is different, mainly the parking lights.

Just google Pick N Pull, it's a national chain. Might want to call and make sure it isn't crushed yet.
