inner fender support pix

whats up guys - so after constructing my 4 - u joint steering shaft in my 49 with a mustang II frt end ive come to the conclusion even the custom header shop cant make anything fit between the frame rails. my sbc requires running a 1 7/8 stepped to 2" headers so ive decided to remove the inner fenders an go with a custom fenderwell set. does anyone have pix of any home made fener supports, or know of anyone that makes a kit for 47 - 53 engine bays?? thx again

I wouldn't think that it would be that hard to get headers that will fit. I ran headers both with the stock frame and then with the Camaro stub on the 48. Is the engine sitting quite low or ?
Photos of the steering setup ?

went with a length of 34" total 1 7/8 primarys stepped to 2" @ 18"

We always offset the engine 1" to the right to help with the steering on the AD trucks. Jay

Not to hijack a thread but with your fenders cut back like that do you anticipate any cooling advantages? I've got a head issue and my whole engine bay is pretty packed and I'm just trying to think of thing I might be able to do to keep things cooler.

i had the same problem that you had.after trying 4 different sets of header. i finally found a set of headers that worked with my angle plug heads.but they will fit both angle and non angle plug heads. i only had to use two single joints on my steering shaft and it works with my ifs ,stock frame and stock inner fender with no modification. the steering shaft comes out of the firewall wall in the stock location and i didnt have to off set the engine. check out the patriot tight truck H8065.it a little pricey at about $280. they come in bare metal or ceramic coated at $380.they come with gaskets,header bolts,exhaust collectors,collector gaskets and collector bolts. the only complaint i had was when i recieved the uncoated headers they had alot of welding splatter on them. it that took me about an hour to clean with a die grinder an a couple sanding discs. then i sent them to a local jet coater. but i hear you can get someone to use a high temp powdercoating for alot cheaper.i think zigs street rods has a better price in newberg oregon and just have them drop shipped to your house.but it would cost more to have an exhaust shop custom make you a set.

I guess I can actually contribute to this thread as well as trying to hijack it!

My headers are StreetRodWorks, I think, brand block huggers and they clear my steering, frame, and MII frontend without a single problem at all. The only complaint I have with them is the coating I got was kinda hokey and one of the bolts on the collector flange on both sides has to be a shorter bold and go in the opposite direction of the others since there isn't room for the bolt shaft to slide into the hole from the top.

the 1" offset really does help in AD trucks. last one i helped with we made custom inner fenderwells and had them louvred for cooling.
