S10 Frame Swap & Using S10 Motor/Tranny?

Doing a S10 frame swap on my 1950 Chevy truck, this truck is going to be my daily driver/shop truck so I want it to run good, be low, and get decent gas mileage..I have a 305 motor or a 355 motor I could use but with gas prices so high I was considering a 4.3 S10 motor with an auto S10 tranny...was wondering if anyone on here has done this, pics, advice, info..etc would be great!

I think there is at least one on here with a 4.3 in it along with the S-10 frame. The weight would be right at the same or maybe a bit less so it should be a fairly economical driver.

thanks for the insight! I looked for a thread but no luck, saw a thread where a guy used a 2.8 but didn't really show him installing it or hooking everything up, that's mostly what I'm looking for..I already have the long box frame for the swap so now I'm just looking for a running donor truck with heat & a/c...moving to Florida in June..gets pretty hot there!

Yep, mine's got the original s10 4.3 and 4L60e in it with 200K+ miles on it and it runs great! 4.3's aren't known for good gas mileage, but are cheap, reliable, and tough. Mine does better on gas than I thought it would, but I can't give any definitive number as I've never had a speedo hooked up in it yet.

Let me know if you want more pics of anything. Mine was moved back 7" from the stock location to fit the AD engine compartment.

was reading on some fuel economy website 4.3s should get 17 city 22 highway..not sure if that's true though..but guess anything would beat the mileage I'd get with the 305 or 355

Re: S10 Frame Swap & Using S10 Motor/Tranny?

I had a 93 S10 for a daily for several years. It had the 4.3 4l60E and 3.08 gears. It got 16-18 in town, when I drove like I had sense. It probably got mid to high 20s on the road, I just didn't make many road trips in it. Jay

looks like the Vortec 4.3 gets a little better gas mileage than the regular 4.3..not sure how much better though

Re: S10 Frame Swap & Using S10 Motor/Tranny?

Just joined the site yesterday, saw this post and wanted to comment. I have a 1994 S-10 Blazer 4 door, bought it new. It has the 4.3 Vortec, 4l60e trans, 3.73 axle with posi (I ordered it that way) has 200,000 + miles. I get 16-17 around town and consistenly get 23-24 on the highway at 70 mph, with the cruise on. Used to live in Harrison Twp. MI before I retired, made that 800 mile trip from here several times and always the same mileage. Been a few years since I did any long distance and more miles on engine, but it should still get 21-22.

Re: S10 Frame Swap & Using S10 Motor/Tranny?

Stock 2000 S-10 ZR2 (18,000mi) 4.3 Vortec, and a 460le under the 49. Gets 17 to 20 mpg. It was a tight squeeze without moving the motor back in the frame. I'm happy!

49ZR2 has what I'd like to do at some point. 4x4 Vortec!
