Found a used a/c compressor, but can you rebuild the used ones or is it better to buy a new one? also its out of a 72 and mine is a 68, will it work? thanks

I am pretty sure it is very difficult to find a new one these days. The ones I have found have all been rebuilt. That being said I would buy a new/rebuilt one X3. I made the mistake of using a used one because I wanted it to look original/old paint like everthing else under the hood, and not long after I put $80 of r-12 in it the compressor went bad.

If you get a new one, I recommend an A/10 replacement from Old Air products. It is NEW, not rebuilt. The rebuilt A/6 will more than likely leak at the front seal. The 4 I went through did

Just like Jason experienced above. The A/10 looks very similar to the A/6 and bolts directly to the factory brackets, and is more efficient. You can use R-12 or R-134. I finally put one in my truck , and had zero problems after that. A/C is not cheap!

You can get a rebuilt A/6 from any parts house for around $150...it will eventually leak.
I had a local shop source a new (NOS) A/6 compressor and it was $800
The A/10 runs around $350-$400

I use used A-6 comp. all the time. They are so rugged you seldom get a bad one. You can get them anywhere from free to $35.
