Question SM465 4 speed transmission color?

I started cleaning some of the gunk off the transmission from my wrecker and it looks like it was either painted red or had the over spray from the body color which also is red-orange. In the pic below, you can clearly see the PTO (made by Chelsea) is a pure red. The trans has the appearance of orange overspray? I have alot of cleaning to do yet.

What is the correct factory color for these? I did a search here and didn't find much. Someone mentioned these were some sort of a red color?

If anyone can provide a color picture and color description, that would be of great help! This is a resto so want to do it the correct color.

Thanks,

Bob

Re: SM465 4 speed transmission color?

I used red primer on mine. That's the closest color I could figure out by what was left for paint. It still looks good after 4 years.

Re: SM465 4 speed transmission color?

I have six of those SM 465's and they are all a ruddy red primer color. The
Bell housings have a chevy orange overspray or the red primer, either/or.

Re: SM465 4 speed transmission color?

Thanks guys! I think I'll use Rustoleum red primer, that stuff holds up well. I don't see any sign of paint on the housing but haven't gotten any further on the clean up yet either.

Is there a list of correct paint colors for various parts on these trucks anywhere? If not, we need one!

Re: SM465 4 speed transmission color?

This is from Rack Man's build, not sure if its factory correct, but it looks damn nice.

Re: SM465 4 speed transmission color?

I think that picture of all the transmissions is pretty accurate for the SM465.
