Suburban Guys .... Questions for you !!

I went to look at this thing this afternoon .... '63
-
-

-
-
It caught my attention when I saw the pics on CL, and it happened to be in my town, few miles from home.

His posting expired, so I cant post the link.

The add read it was a project, all glass was intact, raised crossmember, P/S, 350, 4spd, new intake/carb/headers...4 new bags included, 8 valves, extra parts...

At first glance, it's bad arse..untill you walk up and see the hack job on the rear suspension. It's running a 5-lug rear-axle...with a two link bolted to leafspring pad , under axle...with a track bar located under the axle....

I should of snapped a pic, but didnt want to seem too pushy.

The front end is a new bushing style crossmember...the center of the drag link has been cut and the outter ends welded on top of the center, assuming to compensate for the raised crossmember (WTF ?!?!)

Looks like a clean 350....probably a muncie....P/S mounted to what IS NOT one of CaptionFabs creations....

Dash heater and ashtray smoothed...dash and column both have igniton keys.

He was right in his add .... it is a project that has to be finished.

Oh, the front inners are gone...with 1x2 tubing zig zagged to locate the hood springs/hinges....

Loose bolts here and there....3 nuts to space the L fender lower mount ... 'popcorn' welding thruout

Sounds pretty bad, huh ??

Anyway...the questions.

How are the rear wood floor supported ?? Crossmembers right ??

Currently, its got a HUGE fuel tank sitting almost as high as the notch...with looks to be a full, uncut KP notch.

I have a rolling '63 C-20 chassis...that is super original...wonder if the wheelbase is the same ??

I like the body, just dont care too much for the frame mods...it does lay out really nice..

He is asking $3500 or trades.

I offered him my 71 SS NOVA...Body is 90%...and no drivetrain..(before viewing)...I mentioned keep your drivetrain for the NOVA...its probably the best thing its got !

What you all think ??

More pics, I know....

Looks good, sounds decent. How much work are you wanting to put in to it? That would be my question.

Re: Suburban Guys .... Questions for you !!

ok: the wood floor is supported with cross braces just like a fleetside truck.
the frame is a swb chassis 115 inch.
the rear frame rails -last 2 feet of the sub need to be retained, because of a drop for the rear pan and to mount the rear bumper-just like a front bumper mounts.

front frame mounts are the same as pu, rear "cab" mounts, same location, but smaller and narrower than a pu.
very front rad mounts on a sub are made of vulcanized rubber like a 3/4 ton truck, maybe for a quieter ride?

check gohstrangers sub thread, I posted a pic of the rear frame rails.

I just pulled the front floor out of a rollover sub, still has the chassis(66), and the rear lift gate...
ltm if you need parts, not mine but I can get 'em... still has the complete rear floor.

trade would probably be fiine, especially if you dont' care for the nova anymore... yes it might be worth more right now... but who has cash to buy anything lately?

from the pic the sub bodys great what is missing..
lift gate supports?
rear window locks?
probably cost 5-700$$ if they are missing....

cheif make sure if you get it it has all or close to all like mentioned if it has slider windows the latches are 2-3 hundred a pair the hardware for the rear clamshell set up is expensive and the rubber for all the windows is going to run around 300 bux right off the bat believe me i love the burb and i would get it but keep in mind all the stuff you dont have is kind of expensive as far as the frame you can build new swctions of the frame and make new trailing arms for fairly cheap!let me know if you have any questions

Guys ... you are great, thanks for the info !!

Forgot to metion...he has ALL the glass (windshields/doors/sliders) ... the hatch with hinges.

I believe the gate supports were bent he said.

Does sound like a ok deal I guess.

I would keep it bagged...although I like to start with a 'virgin' chassis ...

So I guess, my '63 C-20 Chassis would be the perfect canidate, huh ??

Thanks again fellas....

Just for kicks, I listed my Nova on CL a while back...for $5K....as is (no drivetrain) .... True SS, originally a 350/350, bench, column shifted car, green with saddlewood interior.

to bad that you are not closer as I have a suburban frame(65), not modified that you could have. heading for scrap as running out of room
you would have to shorten the c20 frame and add an extension to the rear of the frame and you need the rear body mounting frame brkts

Re: Suburban Guys .... Questions for you !!

man, i like it... even at 3500 i think its a deal. that body is straight looking.
your C20 frame would have to be cut down to a short bed length to start with... unless it already is. can't you fix up all the crap-work on existing frame. seems that would be better.

i sure miss my burb.

Re: Suburban Guys .... Questions for you !!

the body "looks" good but i would make sure its not just bondo over rust covered by primer. Primer hides a lot of issues. Looks like a great start to a project though. A little clean up on the work that is done so far and you would have an awesome ride.

I would go for it if you can make it work. Not only is it a Suburban, but it's a '63 to boot! The Suburbans make great family rigs. You, the wife and the kids can all ride in style.

That Nova looks clean and straight.... it is for sure worth a lot more than the 'burb to the masses. If all it needs is a motor and tranny stick to that $5k number.

that thing sure does look sweet sitting there in those pics...i agree with double-checking the body, but it looks pretty solid from pics...if it doesn't get you in over your head, i'd say jump on it...like Capt'n said, it would make a cool family ride!

I agree on the family ride...for sure !!

I think I might do the deal after all !!

The kid that owns it is coming over my house to check out the NOVA (I towed it home from SJ)

This Burban is definately a project (lot of loose ends to tie up), but I really like the way these old burbs look.

The Nova is in good shape, however it makes me feel better knowing that I picked it up for free (well, almost...I traded it for a garage door...my pops gave me the materials, and I installed it...so my time and driving)

I originally mentioned to the kid to keep the engine/tranny out of the burb for the Nova....gonna try and back out of that offer, as I dont have another powerplant for it.

We will see !!
