10 bolt upgrade?

Has anyone swapped out a 10 bolt(1987 4x4) for a 12 bolt(mid 70,s)? Didnt know if u-joint would be the same? I would think brake line and shock mounts are the same?

Re: 10 bolt upgrade?

Everything should be the same. Why are you making the swap. A 12 bolt is only arguably stronger. It offers little upgrade over the 10 bolt. There is much more aftermarket support for the 10 bolt.

As long as the 12 bolt is out of a 73+ truck, all will be the same.

Thanks lukefalls... got a good deal on a 12 bolt. Tryin to get a truck goin again. There is alot of debate on strength between the two.

Re: 10 bolt upgrade?

The U-joint is different. you need a conversion joint. Here is the U-joint I used to put a 12-bolt from a '78 in my '86 factory 10-bolt.

Shock mounts are fine, brake lines are fine, but you may need to do something about your E-brake cables.

Re: 10 bolt upgrade?

An 8.5 10 bolt and a 8.75 12 bolt are very close to identical in strength. If you're not going to beat the hell out of it, it will be fine but if you're planning some rough off road rock crawling stuff no.
