I priced a set of Mickey Thomson Claws yesterday. 46 inch and they were like 430 a tire plus the taxes. I'm pretty sure that one will go for over 500 per tire. (Unless you have a place you can deal with)........

Now there is a tire that could actually use an 18" or 20" rim. Still would have huge sidewalls even with those size rims.
I hear you on the gear issue, but I would be thinking more about the stopping issue. Those are gonna weigh a lot and you better have a very good brake system to be able to handle that much tire.

The 46" claw comes in at just over 100 lbs. The tire is quiet a bit bigger than that.

You either have to have a huge lift or do a lot of cutting to fit those tires! Where do you keep a spare?

You say that they're DOT legal yet I thought the only thing allowed on the roads were 44" or smaller. Or does that just vary from state to state? I just figured, what would be the point of DOT approved when you can't drive 'em on the road anyways.
That would be pretty sweet driving wtih those things, everyone would fear you!
