454 transmission

Hey guys, im going to be buying a '78 Camaro this weekend which used to have a inline-6 in it (nothing now) and im pretty sure a 454 which i am planning on installing will not bolt up to the original transmission in it now.

What kind of tranny will work?

As far as the older stuff goes,any chevy trans will bolt to any chevy engine. Weather or not it will hold up to the 454, may be another matter. What is in it now?

It's probably a TH350. My ex-wife's car she had when we first got married was a '77 Camaro with an I-6 and a 3 speed standard.

Either way... they'll both bolt up to a big block. Won't last long... but will bolt up.

Yeah, my tranny man told me to stick with the th400 as I was going to go a different route...he told me it would shred it...lol

so the bell housing is big enough? just to make things crystal clear, the 454 SHOULD bolt right to the transmission without changing anything?

Yes... the back of a Big Block is the same size as the back of a Small Block and vice versa. How do you think the TH400's are being bolted up to Small Blocks?

Don't forget you'll need a 454 flexplate. 454's are externally balanced and the flex plate is balanced differently from small blocks.

thanks alot guys! one more question.. what would be the best transmission to have for a 454, i imagine the motor is puttin out at least 450 horse because its cammed, headers, aftermarket intake manifold and carb.

The strongest transmission you can get that will hold up to the 454 with little-to-no problems would be the TH400. If you want an overdrive, then the 4L80E, but that requires a standalone computer to work with that old of a car. Very spendy.

TH400's were designed from the factory to handle the torque and HP that Big Blocks put out.
