Are '67-72 stock jacks safe? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Seems like they would be safe to me, but my are friends telling me I should buy/use a hydralic bottle jack.
What's your guys' thoughts?

I don't think I've ever been killed by one. I don't know why they wouldn't be safe.

Like anything they are only as safe as the person using it.

i agree with jhon, the jacking instrucktions and owners manual suggests you jack the front up under the lower a arm pivot bar, and the back under the axle tube as close as you can to the wheel so follow the last step for the front of a 4wd front axle i could imagine if you jack it up any where else that it would be unsafe

I think your friends are confused. The bumper jacks were pretty unsafe.
With all that being said, a bottle jack would be better... however, they aren't idiot resistant either.

It's safe if its properly used to change a tire, which is what it was designed for. It's not safe at all if you jack something up and plan to work under it without good jack stands.

I don't think it's inherently unsafe.... just harder to use than a hydraulic bottle jack.

Like any mechanical device(or non-mechanical device) they were once idiot proof.However modern wisdom has created a better class of idiot.This modern wisdom has evolved to where better idiots are produced only slightly slower than the devices which they operate.

This was once proven to me when I saw a picture of a chain saw which had a warning label on it that said"Do not stop chain with hand or genetailia".At that moment I realized that even a highly qualified lawyer with a specialty in liability law could probably not stretch his imagination that much,therefor someone had to have tried it and sued the chainsaw company.This proves that if you idiot proof something,they will create a bigger idiot.

In closing,I actually agree with chipflyer though only if the jack is in proper working order and set on a stable surface.

The OEM jack that came with my burb was a joke.
It basically buckled trying to lift the Suburban, so maybe they are fine with a half ton short bed PU. But, in my experience the opinion I have of them are pretty low.

it's about like anything else if COMMON SENSE is used, but the "educated" world we have today seems to be running low on it

but i use a modern style jack scissor jack because my OEM is missing
