67-68 and 69-72 Differences
I bought a truck that was basically pieced together. It is registered as a 1971 but has a 67 front clip. It does have 5 lug all the way around and disc on the front. It has 67-68 interior and steering wheel.
I'm looking at ordering a complete wiring harness from AAW and it says it only works for a 69-72. From reading all the threads it appears the AAW kit does not work for 67-68 due to an interferance issue with the emergency brake and something about the wipers. 1. What is the different in the wipers for the 67-68 and the 69-72? 2. My truck does not have an emergency brake at all right now. Is there a way to see which emergency brake would work the 67-68 or the 69-72? Are there different mounting wholes it should have for each style? Pictures would be best. I eventually would like to install an emergency brake. Thanks to anyone who can offer some knowledge. I'm hoping they took a 71 truck and put a 67 front clip on it. Thanks again |

I know 67 front park lights go out when headlights are on, also don't have side markers of corse, 68's do though(have side markers). Maybe 69-72's brake light comes on when you put the E-brake on like newer vehicles, I've never seen one it worked on if thats the case.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just want to make sure I have a 71 with a 67 front clip.
I'm not sure if it was available in 67-68 but my dash does have a factory, speedometer, fuel, battery, temp, oil pressure gauges and, wiper, light switch. If that makes a difference. |

check the vin number on the cab. you can decipher the year that way. also see if the cab vin plate is attached with rosette (flower shaped) rivets. post some pics of the truck when you can. i am in the 909/951 area.

I will try to get some pics up later today.
I sent an email to AAW and this is the response I received. Seems like I shouldnt have an issue. The parking lamp connections are a different configuration. You would just have to cut your parking lamp leads off and replace them. Also, there are no side markers on the 67 fenders. In your instance, you just do not wire them in, that's all. The dash cluster and location of the switches are the really big differences and with you using a 71 dash insert, there will be no problem sir. It should serve your purposes very well. Now, keep in mind that this is for a modified vehicle and is set up for an internally regulated alternator and a HEI or other electronic ignition. Donny Don Bock R&D Manager American Autowire |

I think the price for AAW harnesses is pretty universal. LMC, Brothers, The Truck Shop all have them priced the same.

I would love to spend with one of the vendors but their listed prices are about $70 (without adding in tax) more then rockauto and another ebay seller.

Just my .02 here; 1971 cabs have a raised area at the top center of the windshield (inside cab) for the rear view mirror, only year that had that as far as I know, in 72 they glued the mirror to the windshield

I found that on my 67 the wiper switch is stacked above the headlight switch and the choke is where the wiper switch is on the other trucks. Im sure that has some bearing on the dash harness.
As a side note GONNUTTS!! I could kiss your feet right now! I noticed my front park light go out when I turned on the headlights but backburnered diagnosis for more important repairs. Imagine my hair pulling when my diagnosis would end up at a dead end. Thanks for the information!!!! |

I have read that the thing with the e-brake is where the harness enters through the firewall and possible
interference with the fuse block (?). A 1967-68 e-brake is pictured. Later e-brakes are a push-pedal plus a pull rod for release. |

Well I went and took some pictures and I think I'm more confused. I appears by looking under the column that a 67-68 e-brake should be there right?

The rivets should look like that. 1971 at the end of the vin has no bearing on the year of the vehicle, that is the unit number that rolled off the assembly line.

Well the vin tag rivets are definitely not original. I found a website to decode the vin.
http://www.vehicleidentificationnumb...uck_67-72.html It decodes to a 71, only thing that makes me think the vin tag was switched and not remove for paint in the last 40 years is the fact that the dash under the column has two whole in ii to mount a 67-68 style e-brake. 67-69 have narrower rear axle and 6 bolt, 70-72 are the wider axle by 1.5inches, 70 was 6 bolt, 71-72 are 5 bolt, this is half ton 2wd, ensure you check this prior to ordering axles, I heard it's a common mistake when I called my supplier to see what my problem was, a lot of years for PO's to mix and match parts, 5 lug conversions are very common

The fuse blocks are different. In the case of a wiring harness you go with what cab you have. If it's a '71the Vin=plate would be a single large rectangle. A 67-69 will be two smaller plates. You can check behind the door jamb with a mirror. W/o looking at my trucks,I'd guess those e-brake mounting points are on all dashes,since '68s are no different than 69-72 other than the e-brake. It would make sense that GM would not re-tool just to eliminate a couple bolt holes that are not really visible.

Wiper and light switch orientation is that of a 67-68. 4. Truck does has a large back window. Do all year trucks have a dome light? Does anyone have a picture of mounting wholes or how a 69-72 e-brake mounts? Does anyone have a picture of the 67-68 fuse block vs the 1969-1972 fuse block? I appreciate the help, once again. |

Also up through 1970 the pickups had a throttle rod. Starting In 1971 they used a cable.

Its a little hard to see, but in your pic of the underdash, in the upper right corner, you can just barely see the ignition switch, which appears to be the smaller 1967 one, used only that year, all other years were the larger tapered bowl type chrome outer ring. Everything else people posted is pretty accurate info, except I disagree with the poster's comment that the only diff in 68 cabs from 69-72 is the e-brake. 68 dash holes for light and wiper switches are punched same as 67 and NOT the same as 69-72. And as I recall, the e-brake cable exits thru the firewall differently on 67 and 68s as compared to 69-72, where the cable exits in the corner of the cab. Fuse boxes are mounted horizontally on these 67-68 models, vertically on 69-72. This is all mostly from memory, I have owned close to 300 of these trucks in the last 20 years, done many tear downs, rebuilds and part-outs, but nothing is cast in stone with Chevys I've learned, except that 68-69 Chevelle SS's ONLY came with a 396 engine. I am on my way to my storage yard and will check/take pics on 67, 68, 70, 71 and 72 trucks I have to see if there is anything I am mistaken on or have forgotten. (They say the first thing to go as you age is your memory, I was lucky, the wife went first). Good luck on your build, and contact me if you need parts/info. I am in Phoenix, AZ. I bought a american wire 20 circut universal set for my 69 and it only took about 6 hours to install.i smoothed my firewall so i mounted the fuse block on a plate next to steering column and drilled 1 in hole on left side near front fender and ran all wires to head light in finder to hide,and drilled 1 i/2 holr behind distributor for starter and ign wires.very easy install wires marked very well and every thing worked 1st time.
