max lift

a friend of mine's dad has a 77 1T dually that he bought new thats been setting in their barn for more then 10 yrs. well with some sweet talking I'm going up to get it this weekend.

I've been throwing around the idea of building a 4wd truck for a couple years now. Ive got it all mapped out in my head of what I want other then 1 small detail how much lift do I need to get 38" tires under it? I'm kinda wanting to not go much bigger then 6" can a 38" tire fit with only 6" lift or would I have to go to a 8" lift? I'm thinking with the front wheel being the bud type it would bring the tire in enough that it will clear the wheelwell lip at the bottom where everyone cuts it to make a to big of tire fit

so give me some advise on this

Are you gonna keep dual rear wheels or convert to SRW in the back? I'm assuming this truck is just for pretty no offroad? I ran 42's on my 78' k5 with 4" lift and minimal trimming...It was also on tons. IMO anything over 6" is tacky and pointless, i.e. serves no function. 6" raises the COG too much for my taste, but others have gone that high with success.

But, based on my original assumptions, and to answer your question...

6" should clear 38's.

That is just a rule of thumb, there are lots of other factors to consider...Which 38? a TSL? TSL's run small in the 38 so they def will. 15.50" wide one will prob rub the inner wheel well or springs, but that also depends on wheel offset, wheel width, and back spacing.

I run a 4in suspension 3in body and 38.5 tsl no rubbing and no fender trimming only time they rubbed was when I went up a hill and smashed my front down very hard it pushed the back bottom part of the front fender up a little but it will take about 5 minutes to fix when I get around to it, ill get exact wheel and tire specs tonight

Here is a members truck (ARAMP1)..it only has 4" lift and 33" tires. but thought I would post it anyways. It sits about 3" higher now though as he is putting a Detroit 4-71 under the hood.

ncgame your right I'm not planning on doing any 4wheelin with it. I want it mostly for running over the passes in the winter (I'm tired of being stuck in the snow up there). I'll leave it with drw's just because I like big butts. and I was thinking any thing more then 6" is to much if I knew for a fact that I could get away with only going 4" I would.

Just remember whatever lift you put under it, add 2" for the frame height. 1 tons have a taller frame so 4" spring lift will give you 6". My crew has about 8" of lift and the axle is moved forward, trimming the front fang of the fender should clear 40s....

You should clear 38's with 6". I am running 35x13.5 with 4" on my crew and no rubbing. If you yant to go cheaper get 4" front spring and shackle flip in the rear with a 3" body lift.

it wont get a body lift I hate body lifts. I got a better look at this thing today its got a 454 with the 4spd with the granny 1st I didnt say in my first post but its a std cab pick up. so it should make a nice truck to run around in in the winter

that's what I'm running on my 85 the 4" and 3" body and have 44's with trimming and ran 38.5 TSL-sx with minimal trilling to the lower rear of the front fenders
with the 38.5's and the 76 front clip

What kind of wheels are you going to run? almost all factory and most aftermarket Budd type wheels are only 6" wide. I know I've seen guys run that large of tire on a dually but not sure how they do it...most all 35" and above tires are fairly wide..and even then I would think you would have to run a spacer of some kind between the rears to space them apart.
I had 19.5 8Rs on my dually and they measure just over 35" with a 4" lift..had plenty of room on the front but the rears were pretty close to the fenders.

Years ago SuperLift Superride had a 5.5" lift kit..all spring kit no blocks...I run the rears in my K5...anyway might be perfect..assuming too that the 38s yer after are not going to be super-wide but tall-n-skinnier?

Here is what 8" Alcan lift looks like..not sure how tall the michelins are, 11.00R16 whatever that equals too?
