Auto, which one? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am in the process of collecting parts for my 69 build, which includes converting to diesel & auto. At this stage budget limits to 6.2/6.5 as the duramax is to much from what I have found so far.
All the 6.2/6.5 I have found all come with no trans, so question is what works with them?
At the moment I have found 3 options, 700R4 (lots of $$$) a 4L60E Automatic Overdrive Transmission and a 6.0 vortec max trans with a marking 6csd?

What's suitable, any computer issues, will also have to be colum change and I haven't found any new colums with any other options other than 3 or 4 speed.

Thanks guy's any advice will be much appreciated.

diesels kill 700r4s in short order and the 4l60e is a electonicly controlled 700r4
th400 would be the cheapest if they bolt up..
the power pulses beat the crap out of automatics..

I agree with everything except i would like to note that some diesels came from the factory with a 700r4. Another auto that i would like to suggest, which is more expensive, is the 4l80e. It is a tougher version of the 4l60e. I have a 95 tahoe with a 6.5t and it has the 4l80e. 171k and still never touched it.

the 4l80e is a th400 with an overdrive gear on the back, not a tuffer version of a 4l60e..
and yes 700r4 came factory, but the trucks ate them

My first thought was a 4L80E also

Thanks, this is great info.

There seems to be more of the later 4L60E/4L80E available here but can they be converted back to non computer? Overdrive is a definate bonus for the miles I do.
