Does anyone have a play by play i can use for these drums to tear down and re-assemble? looks like im going to have to do something to replace some fluid, etc. should i call a pro?

Don't you have a simple repair book? That rod is the axle. The drum is held on with a double jam nut setup like a front 4x4. Diff oil moves from the center to the ends to lubricate stuff. When you are done, just top off the rear diff.
But the first thing is go buy a $25 service manual and read it. Then start working.

Here's a link to the socket to get the drum off: http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=K...US414&ie=UTF-8
Try putting the bottom axle bolts back in and a rag stuffed into the tube to stop the flow of oil. It's a messy job for sure. I looked up the parts on Napa website online and brought the part numbers in when I did mine. The Factory Service Manual is a big help for this.
