Bouncing like a low rider...

Since I put on my fat 33s I sometimes have a problem on concrete roads with evenly spaced expansion joints. Once I get up to highway speeds (55 +), the truck starts bouncing with each expansion joint. It starts out not too bad, but keeps getting worse and worse until the truck feels like it's literally going to start popping wheelies. I have to slow down to like 30 mph to break the rhythm, then start the process all over.

Would new shocks fix this? Any ideas will be appreciated.

Re: Bouncing like a low rider...

New shocks will probably stop alot of it. Jump on the bumper and see if it keeps bouncing after you stop. I cant tell if it is a 4x4 or not, but I have had good luck with Rancho RS 5000's on many of my trucks.

Another thing that may help is tire pressure if they are over inflated they will be alot stiffer.

Re: Bouncing like a low rider...

yeah...gotta be worn shocks.

struts/shocks on my 91 dynasty got bad right before i junked it (rust, and i pulled the newer 2.5/3spd for my 86 k car wagon). the car would bounce going down the road...like a sine wave in physics class.....LOL

Sounds like badly worn shocks to me also... possibly made worse by your tires, but tires alone shouldn't make it oscillate like that. What pressure are you running in those 33s? (I have 33s and no bounce at all).

Re: Bouncing like a low rider...

i had a new toyota tacoma a long time ago that the assend would bounce pretty good. but only on the concrete freeways and then only some of them.
personally i think it had something to do with the combination of the shock and the length of the wheelbase and the distance or the seams in the road. my shocks were not bad. i bounced so that i thought i must look stupid to the other drivers.

Re: Bouncing like a low rider...

Thanks for the replies. I think mine bounces mostly in the front end - and it really does get wild - just like you said - like a sine wave that keeps getting bigger and bigger. It never happened until I got the 33's. I was driving on an older country highway. I think that the newer concrete highways are made with varying distance between joints to prevent this kind of thing.

I'll max the tires out and see if that helps. Any recommendations for good shocks for a 4 x 4?

Like I said above, try the Rancho RS 5000's. They have good highway manners, and you can beat on them a bit off road. Plus they are pretty easy on the wallet. Best price I've found was at streetsideauto.com

Re: Bouncing like a low rider...

I have KYB Gas-A-Justs on mine and they have been a very good shock for the money.

Most shocks are re-badged Monroe's, Gabriel's, or Bilstiens. Just get some monroe's and be done without paying the re-badge fees.
