Fuel Injected 5 Speed

Alright here are the questions

New project - Pull Truck - 71 longbed, 4x4, Dana 60/14 w/4.56, Fuel Injected BBC, 5 speed manual,divorced 205, 35'' tires, 8'' lift

1. Has anyone had any experience with Edelbrock's Pro-Flo EFI systems?? Looks good but would like some real world knowledge before I drop $$

2. 5 speed manual - Need/want 5 speed cause of gearing, thought 5 speed manual would be the easiest option. How easy is it to drop in a newer (1999 on up) 5 speed. Electonics ??

3.what does 8'' lift look like on these trucks - could I still pull a gooseneck or do I need to stay somewhere around 6''

After I figure this out the rest is easy then I only need to decide - color

thanks guys

As for a tranny, NV4500 5-speed(granny first gear), or if your really old school, an SM465 .

The nv4500 is the best 5spd made.93-current 2500/3500. I'd go Cummins' too,since a D-Max swap wouldn't be reasonable.I saw a guy drop a D-Max in a 87'K30 though,for a pulling truck. I'm going to run a Cummins 12v/nv4500/married 32spline 205. If I had more play $$$$ I'd drop in a D-Max myself because that's what I run for a DD and they can be built into an awsome powerplant for sled pulling. A guy that I know is running 830hp/1700+ torque through his 02' D-Max.

your gonna make it a pullinh truck? if so Id go with an auto tranny due to when you shift the 5spd you lose your momentum and torque thats being applied to the sled. and in that game momentum means the diff between winning or losing where inches can put you out of the money

He won't be using 5th anyway to pull, cause you don't shift when sled pulling. With D-Max 6spd's you use 3rd gear w/ 4low usurally.I've seen 1 guy try to shift and he was screwed as soon as he did.

My appoligies guys, I meant more along the lines of pulling a gooseneck trailer. I just want the 5 speed cause I want to run a relitivly small tire 35'' with 4.56 gears and that will help keep the rpm down while I drive the hwy.

Still wondering if the edelbrock fuel injection is the way to go or maybe just go with a newer drop out 8.1 liter with the allison behind it..... but then I have a wiring nightmare?? So still lots of ?????????

thanks

IMO, the D-jap is highly over-rated..............My buddy has one in a 2500 reg cab GMC backed by a 6 spd and it pulls a gooseneck about as good as a 12v in a pre-93 Dodge.

D-jap If you mean D-Max you've only seen one that had something wrong with it . I compared the 2 when I bought my D-Max and there was no comparasen. The D-Max is way faster off the line{01' to 01'} and is wrapped in a much better truck . Don't get me wrong a highly mod'd 12v is an awsome sled puller but day to day I'll take my D-Max. Back to the subject. If you were to run an 8.1 be sure to run a 6spd,it will pull better and be a little easier on fuel.I was running a mod'd 454/5spd and getting 11-13mpg empty and 7 loaded with 10k-15k. I now get 18mpg empty and 11-13mpg pulling the same sized load.

D-jap............Haven't you heard anyone call them Durajaps? That is what everyone calls them here

I honestly really liked the truck, but for all the hipe I've seen about the engine it didn't live up to how I expected it to run. It didn't have the low end like I expected, I pulled it down and it wouldn't lug like a trusty inliner. Ran more like a gas engine, sorta like a Powerstroke, but didn't have it under the hood like a 7.3PSD(Haven't drove a 6.0 yet)...........I was told D-max worked the best will the allison, I could understand why after running that one with the 6 spd. Basically, I'd over-rate it if I worked at car and driver........But I think pulling a gooseneck with two tractors would be frowned upon there

I still think you drove a bad one. We have one with an Allison as well and it doesn't pull as wellas my 6spd.You are difinately right about the lugging though a CTD will outlug any diesel.

I don't know, they just came out when he ordered it...........Its and early model d-max and he has had some trouble with it. Heard they fixed all the issues he had by now.

I get cranky when I have an engine with no low end. I like torque where I can use it

I absolutly LOVE my built 454 w/Edelbrock Pro-Flo MPFI
I run a SM465 4speed mated to a NP205 D60/14FF.
One thing that is difficult about the EFI setup is the hand held "brick" or controller it takes a while to get use to all the settings you have to scroll thru to get the engine running at peek performance. My buddys and I got my rig running "well" then I took my rig to a Dyno Performance shop and after the first run on the Dyno they found my Air/Fuel ratio was waaaay off. So they spent another hour on the dyno and tuned it all up for me from idle to WOT.
Well worth the 200 bucks it cost me. Rear wheel #s I got from the dyno test are HP= 280 & Torque = 383
I wheeled with an Edelbrock Qjet carb on a 350 for good 12yrs or more and making the swap to a 454 and EFI my trottle responce is so AMAZING!! ZERO hesitation!!
If your gonna run 35" I would stick with a 6" lift..8 may be a bit much for towing..IMO

Oh and on the DMax topic ~ I daily drive a 05 Dmax/Alli Silvarado 4x4 CC LB it is also my tow rig for wheeling trips and family hwy trip vehicle. I have 198K on it now and the only issues have been batterys, both front wheel hub assy, rear u-joint and that is about it! Great truck!!
