1970 CST-20 carburetor question

First post here, love the site. I am looking for an answer as to exactly which carburetor came stock on my truck.

I just picked up a well preserved '70 CST-20 long bed w/350 4bbl and an T-350 auto. No air, 2wd. All original, except it has 3 carbs with it. The one on it is not the right one, the previous owner just bolted it on to move it. He said one of the other carbs is the correct one but not sure which.

I have been calling auto part stores for a rebuild kit or a reman carb, but they keep asking me "What carb is on it"? Then they list off 10 different models of Q-Jets.

I'm pretty certain that with particular engine and tranny combos there was just 1 carb offered for what ever truck you ordered. I am trying to find out what carb is the correct one. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Be patient young man.
The first thing you need to do is do some research.
Go to the other sections of this site , that are more specific
to you question. In your case engine section and look for
QuadraJet.

I don't know carb numbers, but, if you post a photo of the two carbs in question, there is a good chance someone can pick it out.

The parts store guys should have asked you for some numbers off of the carb... (that way they can find the correct kit, or take the carb in with you.) You know that the one on it is wrong, so you've got a 50/50 shot with the ones you've got. They'll hook you up with a kit or a re-man with COMPLETELY different numbers.

As far as a particular carb for a certain engine/trans combo, don't count on it. They were built on an assembly line... And just because the P.O. says it's original, doesn't mean it is. He may have swapped it in '74 and forgot.

The carb numbers on the QJet are on the drivers side toward the rear, running vertically. The only two numbers I can readily find that would be correct for your truck are:
7040208 CHEV 70 TRUCK 350 FED (49 state)
7040511 CHEV 70 TRUCK 350 CALIF
From what I've gleaned the number system is generally reliable but exceptions were known to have happened. I've got a 350 all original (air cleaner to oil pan) that came out of '72 truck, but the carb number codes for 1968. The numbers stamped in the block are correct match for the truck (350 4bbl m/t) but the last four (vin) numbers are not stamped. Someone stated that it may have been a line change or warranty replacement. Who knows? It seems a kind of odd combination-----350 four bolt main 010 block 487x heads 4bbl carb, and "three on the tree"!
