70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

I have been kicking around doing a build thread on mine so here it goes. I picked her up in February for $2400 and put her to bed till April when I could kick the wife out of the garage. She came from Modesto Cal. from what I understand the guy that did the work on the truck died and his son went out and brought mine and a 71 4X4 back. The truck had been painted blue and white the original color was gold. All it needed to put it on the road was tires, interior, front and rear glass then I got on this site and my mind started working.

So I went and bought a 72 for parts for $900. I took the glass and put it in mine then I wanted the 5 lug axles and disk brakes and it had a 350 which I thought would be a good swap for the 307.

Here are some pix of when I was putting her in the barn for the winter

Man, that's a great truck for $2400! It sounds like you're well on your way with it too.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

This was the donor truck, it was supposed to have a Professionally rebuilt engine but it had a bad oil leak from the timing cover so when we got it to my cousins house and pulled the engine apart we found that the crank was scored like it was put together in a sand pile and the front cam bearing had spun so that went to the machine shop to be fixed $$$. Then I striped every thing I could off and took it to the scrap yard. Sold a lot of parts to members here. Thanks guys

Yea the guy was so good in it he took a tire off a rim I was impressed. The scrap yard is only a 1/4 mile from my house.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

I brought the 70 to my cousin’s poll barn and started disassembling it to pull the engine and cross member. She has a granny 4spd so the removable hump was nice.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

Found some intersting info on the diffrences from the 70 to 72.
1. the window cranks are 3/8" longer because of the plastic door panels.

2. the 5 lug axel's can be used in the 6 lug housing the axel's are the same length, to swap you need to change the brakes and drums.

3.The cross member can be swaped in by just enlarging the top front bolt holes all the other line up.

4. Inner and outer tie rod ends are different size

The P/S pump pully dosen't line up with the 72 balancer using the 70 pully, working on this one but the fan and water pump line up

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

And also, I'm pretty sure you could have left the original cross member in there. All you needed to change was the spindles out for the 5 bolt conversion I believe.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

The ball joints are different they go in the 2 year increments 67/68 - 69/70 - 71/72 then 73 up are the same for all the 2wd shoe box model's. The 73-87 will also fit with the same modification on the cross member. The 73-87 are better because they have rubber bushings on the A-Frames. The main reason I didn't do just the spindles is that I had the 72 cross member and it was less work every thing went in one piece. Also the inner and outer tie rod ends are diffrent size.

I went to Wisconsin to look at a 71 for $1500 it was about a 3hr ride and it turned out to be a rust bucket so when I saw this one I jumped on it. The only rust I found was on the air intake for the vent it was full of leaves so I cut that out and patched it back in and painted it with POR 15.

I have the Cali Title and all the Cali regestation from 1970 till it was parked I think it was in 88 and a detailed list of work and $ that was put in it. The PO spent $600 for the paint suplies and $400 getting the 307 running

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

Took the the cross member to the car wash and made a mess but it cleaned up real nice. I used some ZEP Industrial Cleaner it is corrosive but it melts the 40yr old grease off of every thing . I sprayer everything with POR 15 it looks pretty good. I also cut the trans cross brace out so the reinstall of the engine and trans would be easier. I want it to look as clean as possable with out doing a frame off

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

Got the cross member in and brakes hooked up it has brand new calipers and rotors on it, Put new rubber brake lines on and new inner and outer tie rod ends. Bought a new booster and Master and new rear brakes & wheel cylinders and had the drums turned. Put new wheel seals in and installed the 5 lug axels.

The square washer is where I had to enlarge the bolt hole so it would line up

Looks like you have a few projects going. I was thinking about a dually 4X4 before this one but couldn't find one that wasn't rotten.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

I loaded it up on the trailer and brought it back home to pressure wash the under side then sprayed it with POR 15, I top coated it with Rustolem Semi Gloss Black I think it came out pretty good.

Yes I do. I'm trying to liquidate some right now too. I have thought about making my Longhorn a DRW too, but I want it to some what ride half way decent. That'll be hard enough with the hefty springs it has.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

Thanks guys! I'm trying to figure out how some of these guy's do these big mods so quick but it could be just me being old and slow and maybe sometimes to much beer.

She had a little rot in the air in take for the vent so I cut that out sprayed POR 15 inside it before patching it in then sanded and painted the fire wall to cover the rattle can paint job the PO did. For doing it outside I got lucky and it came out pretty good it was fairly warm so the paint dries fairly quick
