No Limit's "K-10"

NEW PROJECT We've had a great two seasons with the Silver Bullit F-100. After our victory in texas, we have won the Goodguys Truck Class Championship for 2011. Pretty cool to do it two years in a row. We also won the Truckin' Throwdown in the spring. BUT, I know it won't be like this next year. Plenty of guys around the country are building trucks to come and beat us, and some of them can do it. The Bullit is a basic build. (I know what some say, but listen) It's an off th rack chassis, crate motor (appx 425 hp) T-5 trans, 9" with 3.70 gears, all steel body. It's a bolt together package that anyone can duplicate, and it can be beat. I drive it to work two or three days a week, and to local shows and cruises. It doesn't get hot, and it burns pump gas. That aproach is NOT going to dominate next year.
So, we need a new flagship truck. The "K-10" project. (Killer C-10) YES, a Chevy. a '70 to be exact. We tossed around a lot of ideas, and a few sketches and photoshopped a few picts. A Chevy was a natural, since we already did a Ford. We thought about a suare body, but '72 is the cut-off at many events. This will not be a bolt together truck. And, we're not focussing on winning the truck class any more. We want to beat up on the fast guys, like Finch, Tucker, Voekel, Pozzi, .... Yes, they are in Pro-Touring built muscle cars.

The plan, 108" wheelbase, 2700 lb., 550hp Ls, 5 speed, take no prisoners bad motor finger. We're well on our way. Where are the picts? We're goung to hold off until jan to start posting build picts, competition and all, you know? It is pretty wild, and actually not very expensive, in parts, but LOTS of fab labor.
We are thinking about a name. Any thoughts? "The Reaper", or "Sucker Punch" have been thrown around, but we're not very good at the whole abstract name thing, so, what do you think? I'll post up info, but no picts for a while.

I can't wait to see what you guys come up with....it is pretty amazing how the autocross interest has grown. Seems like every major player in the aftermarket suspension biz is deep into this. Pretty diverse offerings too. Everything from trucks to late Camaros to El Caminos...heard rumors of some Lingenfelter powered mid 30's Chevy's too.

I still have to getting around to installing your underbed gas tank i got from you a long while back on my 70 1/2 ton shorty. Anyway, glad you are posting up on this project...been hearing about it for a while.
Need any more design or sign work?

Rob, this is awesome! It's awesome to hear you're going to build a truck and compete with the built cars and such. It was awesome watching you this year and I look forward to being able to watch the new ride! How about D C V S for the name and that could be your plate to.

We built all the suspension for the Lingenfelter '39, James Crosby did the install work back in indy at RideTech. It should be a terror. Trent Summers is also on a wild build back there, a 71 C-10 using a buch of circle track parts and our WideRide IFS. You need to get your C-10 up and come out to Adams and play

Hey, it was good to meet you guys in Des Moines. I have to say that that is the nicest fair grounds I've ever seen. This should be a really fun build. So, am I missing the obvious? What is the D C V S for?

Have you checked out the latest Goodguy's Gazette? There's a reader's letter complaining about the guy in the silver truck dominating auto-cross, making it impossible to compete. Guess he'll be even more upset next year

Yep, I'd have to say he's probably not the only one who feels that way. I am a bit suprised that it was printed, but, thats the game. We set out to prove a point with that truck. That trucks could be competetive, not just in the slowest class (originally it was thought that the truck class would be the slowest), but in the fastest class. Our goal was simple, but not easy. All off-the-shelf parts, all steel, very streetable. I know many think the 'Bullit is a pure built racer, but that's just not true. It's built on an off the rack chassis, the same one anyone can get. The motor is a 425 hp windsor 392" stroker, from ford, in a box. Trans is a T-5 from a '94 mustang. Body is all steel. It weighs 3380 empty, and has 57% nose weight. Yes, it has big breaks, but to tell the trueth, at speeds under 60, it stopped better with the 12" OEM brakes. Our center of gravity is appx 10" higher than the average camaro. It's hardley a race truck, but it does perform very well. To those who think it's unfair, How did you prep for the last event? What are your alignment baselines? How do you start your tire pressures? Did you really think it would be so easy that you could just drive up, run a few laps and win? what value would there be in that? Well, we proved we could be competetive in an all steel street truck, and now the competition is ramping up.
Several trucks are now being built to be competetive next year, and they all want to beat us. Some might, but we aren't going to make it easy for them. All year we have seen the fastest guys and studied there cars. We've seen a bunch of 600+ hp motors, lots of Nascar parts, like Appleton racks and full floaters, a ton of carbon fiber, all this to beat our steel body pick-up by 1 second or less. What will it take to win next season? a smarter approach.
I'm sure there's going to be some bantering about here on this site, which should be good fun. And I invite all comments. Hotchkis is not going tp let up. The Roadster shop is building a C-10, as are many others, including some pretty sharp Indiana boys. Kevin Bapst is rebuilding, and the guys from Dueces Wild keep getting faster. How many others? a LOT. This is good for everyone, the faster we go, the bigger the truck market will get, and the better the parts will be for all.

Rob, you already know there will be whiners! If you really want to make them cry, we should make an effort on my corvette to make it handle for a road coarse and then make them run against a nose heavy diesel.

A pound is a pound. and that's bad. Weight will be a key factor in this build. And we're going to look at everything. If a 3500 lb truck has 450 hp. it seams pretty fast. It has a power to weight ratio of 7.78 lbs/hp. If you shed 500 lbs, down to 3000 lbs, the ratio would be 6.67 lbs/hp. If it still weighed 3500 lbs you would need 525 hp. to keep up. So, saving weight is a lot cheaper than buying big motors, although, big motors sound really cool.

Here are some rotors. A stock 12" C-10 rotor weighs in at 29 lbs. (not shown.) A 12" impalla rotor, left, is 1" thick and weighs 26 lbs. The 12" wilwood w/aluminum hub, for a camaro, is only .812 thick, and weighs in at 17 lbs. On the right, is a wide 5 hub and 12" x 1 1/4" wave rotor, it weighs 13 lbs. I am really taking a hard look at this wide 5 stuff, but for us it has two problems. 1. must use custom fabricated spindles. 2. NO BODY makes 18" wide 5 billit wheels. - But SEMA is coming up soon, and there will be lots of people to talk to.

why limit your selfs with a 5 spd,, why not a vette sourced paddle shifted 6 speed transaxle.. more of a 50/50 split and irs , yes it's an auto.. but man o man

If they can figure out how to have AWD, it would be unbeatable for another three years.
I have tinkered around with building 4x4 mid engine truck where the engine is sitting in the front of the bed with the radiator still in the engine bay and air scoops on the bottom of the truck.

Let me clear up a few things. The 'K' is for 'Killer', and it will be 2wd. We did take a good look at some AWD components, Trailblazer, Cadilac, ..... but the weight and ability to take horsepower are questionable. The Hemi-Jeep AWD is interesting, but I fear the backlash from both the GM and Mopar camps on such a crossbreed. At our local track, built Evo's are the kings. - But, well, we're not going to go there. We also want to go to some other events. Drag week, Power tour, Bonneville, Hwy 341, Optima, Pikes Peak, Flying mile.... So we need something that can survive, be repaired, and not break the bank. We considered IRS, and the 'Vette transaxle, and finally set that aside. Automatics are still in consideration, we talked with Mark Bowler - Bowler Transmission, about auto's, I know that he is building a paddle-shifted 4-speed auto for some of our competition. Main topics at the moment are - Rear axle/trans combo, ? Quickchange with a 4 or 5 speed, or standard diff with a 6 speed. - and, - Wheel/tire combo. We are leaning towards a 18" x 11" wheel with 5 1/2" backspace on all 4 corners, running 295/40 or 315/35 all around, so we can rotate tires. Keep the input coming, I'm sure we need it.
