transmission question 350 Turbo or 700R
My 71 Chevy Pickup has a 350 Turbo transmission. It slips a little when it is cold, but otherwise is fine. I am planning on changing the fluid and filter to see if that cures the slipping. Mileage on the transmission is unknown.
I have 700R transmission in an 84 suburban I am junking. If I was to have either transmission rebuilt, which would be the better choice? (I am looking for a cruiser, not a hot rod) Would I get any improvement in gas mileage with the 700R having the overdrive? If it is better to keep the 350 Turbo, then is the 700R worth taking out to sell separately while scrapping the rest of the vehicle? Thanks for any advice.... I have been mulling this over and need input from others. |

Re: transmission question 350 Turbo or 700R
There have been a lot of threads regarding this same topic. Things to consider. tire size, gear ratio, type of driving, engine horsepower (determines the level of build). Personally I would look for a newer 700 than the '84. The 84 will require quite a few upgrades to make it reliable so you don't have to pull it out in a couple of years.

Re: transmission question 350 Turbo or 700R
Keep it simple, rebuild the TH350. I have a '72 'burb with a 3.73 700r4 and a '72 cheynne with a 3.07 TH350. I almost prefer the 3.07's and TH350.
The burb originaly had a 3 spd. manual and 3.07's. If I were to do it over I would have just swapped in a TH350. |

Re: transmission question 350 Turbo or 700R
^ Almost prefer a th350 and 3.07 combo? Interesting comment, I am curious as to the answer. Th350 is certainly a cheaper build..but is there something about the driveability that is lacking with the 700?
