Bastard 64 VIN?? Can't Identify

Got a 1964 C20 and I am having a little trouble decoding 2 parts of the VIN... any help would be much appreciated. I have scoured the internet looking for the answers but can't seem to find any info.

Here is the VIN: 4C259H127366

So here is what I know:
- 1st Digit: 4 = 1964
- 2nd Digit: C = 2WD
- 3rd/4th Digit: 25 = 3/4 ton

Now here are the problems:
- All I can find for the 5th digit is that if it is a 4 it is a pickup... mine has a 9 and I know it had a pickup CAB but what was on it for a bed from the factory is unknown... cab/chasis, flat bed???
- I have found all kinds of information for the 6th digit and various MFG plants BUT none of it for MY 6th digit of H... anyone know where the heck my truck might have been Built??

Then the last 6 digits being the production number is a no brainer... I really would like to know where this truck was built but MOST importantly, what is the 9 and how was this truck configured off the assembly line?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Bastard 64 VIN?? Can't Identify

I would say a 1964 - 2wd -3/4 ton -stake body truck . I believe H is fremont california .

Quote:
1960 - 1964

In 1960, VINs were radically revamped to reflect the growing diversity in the trucks being offered. The VINs of these years are comprised of seven elements. This table doesn't include info for El Caminos, Sedan Deliveries or Corvair trucks.

1st Element 2nd Element 3d and 4th Element 5th Element
Year Type Model Prefix Body Style
"0" = 1960
"1" = 1961
"2" = 1962
"3" = 1963
"4" = 1964

"C"= Conventional (2WD)
"K"= 4-Wheel Drive
"G"= Chevy Van
"P"= Dubl-Duti Package Delivery

"14" -- 1/2-Ton, Standard Wheelbase
"15" -- 1/2-Ton, Long Wheelbase
"25" -- 3/4-Ton
"36" -- 1-Ton

"2" -- Chassis & Cowl
"3" -- Chassis & Cab
"4" -- Pickup
"5" -- Panel
"6" -- Suburban
"9" -- Platform/Stake

Re: Bastard 64 VIN?? Can't Identify

Awesome, thanks. I didn't see the "9" in any of the lists that I found and I still don't see where the "H" = Freemont, CA but I will take your word for it. The most important thing for me was to determine the chassis configuration so I can start rounding up parts as there is currently only a bare chassis behind the cab.

As a Platform/Stake body, this truck was probably originally a dually???

Thanks!!

Not necessarily . I remember those being single rear wheel from the factory . 3/4 ton is too light for duel wheel .

I don't remember just when, but the Fremont plant designation was changed to a 'Z' sometime before '66

Re: Bastard 64 VIN?? Can't Identify

Kind of confusing . Seems like 1964 only - H was fremont ??? H was supposedly used for GMC in Oakland for years 60 - 66 of production .

Quote:

1st digit - Model year -
0 = 1960
1 = 1961
2 = 1962
3 = 1963
4 = 1964

A = Atlanta, GA
B = Baltimore, MD
F = Flint, MI
G = Framingham, MA
H = Fremont, CA (1964 only)
J = Janesville, WI
K = Kansas City, MO
L = Los Angeles, CA
N = Norwood, OH
O = Oakland, CA
R = Arlington, TX (1964 only)
S = St. Louis, MO
T = Tarrytown, NY
U = Southgate, CA (1964 only)
W = Willow Run, MI
Y = Wilmington, DE (1964 only)

Last 6 digits - Production sequence starting at 100001 at all plants.

This one is for 1964 Chevy cars but it is using H for 1964 Fremont so I'm guessing Fremont was changed from H to z in 1965 . Scroll down to the explanations for the 6Th symbol .

While I was looking that some of the info indicated duel wheels were offered in the C-30 and up . Of course that doesn't rule out special orders .

Re: Bastard 64 VIN?? Can't Identify

In 1963 you could get duals on a C20, so I would assume the same would apply to 64.

NOTE THE TRAILING ARMS ON THE C20 WITH DUALS. C30 HAD LEAF SPRINGS.

AWESOME!!!! Thanks for all your help. I have been working with the 73-91 C/K (R/V) trucks for almost 30 years but I am new to the 60-66 trucks... hopefully I will be able to start contributing information for others as I learn. Again, thank you for all your help.
