Chalk the front tires
Jack the rear of the truck up.
Put jack stands under the rear housing with the tires off the ground.
Mark the inside of a rear tire with a piece of chalk or tape, pointed towards the ground
Mark the drive shaft again with chalk or tape
Turn the drive shaft counting the turns until the tires makes a complete revolution.

2 3/4 turns would be a 2.73's
3 3/4 turns would be a 3.73
4.25 turns 4.11's or 4.30's (closer to 4 = 4.11)

i did 4 turn and some change so i have to swap the axle or gear what is the simple and cheap way to do it. that why i could only go 55 mph on the highway.

This doesn't work with an open differential. You have to have one of the rear wheels on the ground.

Easiest way to tell what gear you have is pull the differential cover off. Most of the time the fluid in a rear end doesn't get changed very often, so it will be a good opportunity to put new differential fluid in it anyway.

You can either pull the cover off and count the ring gear teeth and pinion gear teeth and divide the ring gear by the pinion. Example: 41 teeth on the ring and 11 teeth on the pinion (41 divided by 11) and you get 3.73, which is what my truck has in it.

Or you could just look at the ring gear and it should have the tooth count stamped in the outer edge of the ring gear. It will have some numbers and one of the sets of numbers will be 41:11, if you have 3.73's.

Hope that helps.
