i've got a 1953 chevy half ton truck...

I have a couple of newbie questions guys, sure would help if some of you could chime in. I was wanting to do an oil change on the truck but was noticing there is no visible oil filter, did these trucks not have an oil filter of any kind? Also, what kind of motor oil (brand/weight) are some of you guys using, i have the original inline six on my truck, i was thinking of using 10W40 high mileage.... any comments/suggestions?

Welcome from So. Arizona !!

I think oil filters were a add on on the early trucks,

If it were mine and no oil filter I would use 30W Non-Detergent oil and change it frequently.

They used an external cartridge (Or toilet paper roll) filter. They were a factory option or Fram made an aftermarket one. Do a site search and a number of threads will show up. They are on Ebay all the time, I think I might have one in my parts box too in case you want to keep it stock. Block is tapped for one line, I think you have to drill the oil pan for the second.

Thanks for the replies guys. And after carefully inspecting around the engine area, it definitely did not come with the oil filter option. Is 30 weight non detergent the same as HD30 weight motor oil? Does anyone know if i can use either or?

Yes the 30 wt that you described is what you want for that engine for sure non detergent.

The oil filters were an "option" when those trucks were new and some buyers wouldn't spend the extra few bucks. The canisters and brackets are easy to find and not expensive and the lines are easy to find new and I don't thing you have to do any drilling as there should be a plug on the side of the block for the drainback line to plug into.

These engines want oil changes every 1000 miles too.

It is interesting to note that the first 2 years of the 265 small block Chevy did not have filters either. This same style of filter bolted to the intake manifold on it too.
