Mid/Late 60's Corvette Steering Wheel, Any Pics??

my new 15" Grant Classic walnut steering wheel is just too small for my liking. since I have no power steering and wider tires, turning the ol' girl is a bit of a pain. I guess I miss my old oem wheel that I assume is approximately 17" diameter.

anyway, I was looking at a couple of trucks on here a few months back that had mid to late 60's Corvette steering wheels in them. I think the diameter is 17" to 18" and the dish is shorter. these wheels are a 3 spoke design with either simulated wood or plastic grips and look perfect in our model trucks! kind of looks like the Grant wheel in my truck now, but with a larger diameter and shorter dish.

so is anyone running one of these wheels? any difficulties in mounting them on an oem column? would you post a pic?

side note:
I love powell72's mid 60's Impala wheel too...... decisions, decisions.

side note no# 2:
anyone want to buy a new steering wheel?!

Hey Doug... did your truck come with the original wheel in it, or had it been swapped out by the time it reached you?

bump...

Nate,
the original was in it, but like all oem wheels of this time period, it was cracked beyond repair.

If you'd have posted this six months ago I could have gave you the extra wheel we had that was the same as the one in my wife's truck!

Re: Mid/Late 60's Corvette Steering Wheel, Any Pics??

Hey Doug, the restorations shops sell the correct hub for these wheels. You can buy the complete kit with the wheel, hub, horn button, and horn contacts as well. Maybe some of the venders on here carry them as well.

Maybe I misunderstood you, there is no adapter needed, just the correct hub for the wheel.

Re: Mid/Late 60's Corvette Steering Wheel, Any Pics??

here are 2 wheels:
The green one was one I had bought because it was supposed to be blue, but it was more green colored when I cleaned it. Wound up selling it on ebay so I could buy this blue one for my pickup.

They're about the same diameter as the stockers. Good choice going with the comfort grip instead of the wood spoke, the dish on the wood wheels is about 4 1/2''. I go back and forth on if I want a comfort grip in my truck, I love the three spoke, but my wheel is a smaller diameter than a three spoke.

Them wheels look good. Didn't an early (65 66) Camaro SS have one the same design only with a hardwood and rivets??

Re: Mid/Late 60's Corvette Steering Wheel, Any Pics??

I ran a comfort grip in my '70 GMC. I think it's a great choice for a truck. I got mine from Muscle Factory. They sell a kit for $199 that includes wheel, adapter, bots, and center cap. I don't remember seeing colors, though, just black.

Edit: If you get the kit, get one for a pre '69 vehicle. The steering column without the ignition switch in cars is the same diameter as the truck column.
