Why Would Someone Do This??
OK, I need you sleuths to help me on this one.
Here's the SPID of my Cheyenne. What benefit is there to cutting off the top of the SPID? Judging by the appearance of the glove box door, this appears to be original to the truck. The color and amount of fade are identical. It has the options that the SPID calls for - the ones that are missing are items like the AM radio, bench seat, full wheel covers and tailgate. The seller did say the truck was a Super, and I know it's not, but why add the faded Super emblems and remove the top part of the SPID? Here's the only thing on the truck that was done to pass it off as a Super: What am I missing here?

Re: Why Would Someone Do This??
Maybe the cab and glovebox door came from another truck. The VIN on the top part of the SPID would have given it away!
Just my best guess. Keith |

I wasn't able to find the VIN on the top of the frame in the engine compartment. It may be real interesting when I try to tag this thing.

Re: Why Would Someone Do This??
Maybe it was peeling and every time he got in the glove box he was catching on it. So he took a straight edge and a razor blade and trimmed it off?

Re: Why Would Someone Do This??
Hey, this seems an appropriate point to insert a question about Cheyenne Supers - I've seen the "Super" mounted about 10 different ways. Bottom line is I check the SPID and go from there, but which way is correct?
I've seen a few lately that were "centered" under CHEYENNE 10, which I know is incorrect The other most common ways I've seen them is left justified (which is correct - i.e. left edge in line with left edge of Cheyenne) - but what about the spacing between the top of the "Super" and bottom of the "Cheyenne"?? - have seen NO space and have seen too much space, and everything in between. Which way is correct? As for the cut SPID - I'd throw in my vote with CG. Someone COULD have swapped glovebox doors, but if most the other options match, I'd guess it's original and the guy grabbed a super emblem out of the junkyard... |

Re: Why Would Someone Do This??
On true supers there should be little to no space between the emblems. In the original release litterature it looked as though they were initially to be one single emblem connected. You can usually tell faked trucks by too much spacing down, or the passenger side will be all the way forward to the "e" on cheyenne emblem. Many try to make custom deluxe trucks into supers because holes for deluxe are there, but hole spacing is different and it sits too low. I personally like the ones who make 69/70 models into cheyennes and add the super into the engine designation holes.

Re: Why Would Someone Do This??
Steve i personally think that they may have been trying to get rid of rolled up material. Is the vin sticker still on the driver door?

Re: Why Would Someone Do This??
I'll have to look - forgot about that. As to the rolled up material - look how much was removed.
Here's the SPID from my other truck:

Re: Why Would Someone Do This??
71 Super - THANKS! That is what I presumed to be correct, minimum spacing and always far left lined up wiht the "C" - but I could never seem to confirm it other than eyeballing factory pics from afar. Thanks very much.
As for the SPID, when shown next to a full one, wow, that really looks like a deliberate hack job - to hide SOMEthing. |

Re: Why Would Someone Do This??
Zoomin, don't worry about trying to tag or title it, all they looked at on my K20 was the VIN plate, and I had to show them where it was, she was looking on the dash LOL she checked the numbers against the paper work and made me a Oklahoma title. they never looked at the frame. heck I doubt she even knows about the frame numbers. If ya think your gonna have trouble just bring it down to Chickasha. Coop

Re: Why Would Someone Do This??
Zoomin, I don't know how things may have changed between '68 and
your truck (both the glovebox metal skins and the SPIDS) but here's a pic of my stock '68 spid, if it helps (as far as configuation or size or placement). |

Re: Why Would Someone Do This??
My first question was,"Is this a short bed?",because the original wheelbase is now missing. Maybe it's as simple as someone started to peel the SPID off but saw it doesn't come off clean and quit. Thhen, either that person or the next cut it off. I don't think it had anything to do with making it appear to be a Cheyenne Super because nothing up there says that and the SPID doesn't show it's a Cheyenne Super. Maybe someone "started" to swap SPIDs and stopped.
