'71 k20

Hey all, I recently bought a 71 k20 and I was wondering if anyone has ever seen an aftermarket indicator light for the 4x4 shifter (to let me know which gear I'm in)?

No,I never have. It seem simple enough to know. But,if you feel you need an indicator you could most likely rig up a later model one to work. 4-Lo is obvious because you are 2x reduced and on the opposite side of neutral from 2-Hi,2-Hi is behind neutral (and only the rear wheels spin),and 4-Hi is just all the way back. Do you have the original knob with the pattern on it?

Some maufacturers offered "4X4 engaged" lights as options. My IHC pickup has one. There was also an aftermarket kit or two back in the day as I remember. But these only indicate the front driveline is engaged not the atual gear position selected.
If "gear selected" is your desire, then you might take a look at the thread on T221 shifter boots.

I am with Special-K on this.

These old trucks run like night and day when in 4 wheel drive, and behave nothing like modern day 4x4 trucks when the transfer case is engaged.

Even hopping into the cab of a classic 4x4 one tends to notice the transfer case shifter in the engaged position, though I am assuming you are familiar with older 4x4 trucks.

I mean no disrespect to your question, but I am curious as to why you are interested in setting this up?

Good call, that light is neat that I posted, but you're both right......If you can't tell what your tcase is in.....then something isn't working. A nifty little option....but unrequired.

......maybe an indicator to remind you to lock your hubs.......have any of us been there? I'll bet only once........

Thanks all for the input.....I hear what you guys are sayin, prob dont need any such thing. But I was interested because im having some trouble feeling the difference when i shift from 2hi to 4hi, prob need to get my transfer case serviced. Thanks again

I can't tell when mine is in 4-hi or 2 by just looking at it. However, the moment I try to turn with it in 4-hi I know.

When I'm not sure where it is and I want 2, I pull it all the way back (4-high) then move it forward one detent.

I don't use 4-low much any more. 9 times out of 10 4-low is quickly followed by hooking a chain to a bud's truck or a winch to something stout because I'm usually stuck or just about ready to be.
