EFI swap ??

Well, it's *really* dead around the shop today so naturally I'm sitting here daydreaming about drivetrain swaps.

A question for those that have been here and done this, though --
What did you do for the fuel pump / tank solution? I haven't torn it apart yet but I'm assuming there is just a bottom mounted pickup for the mechanical pump & no provision for an in tank mounted electronic (duh) fuel pump.
Can an electric pump be retrofitted into the tank or do I want to get my hands on a rolled over Suburban or similar and plan on putting the new tank under the bed or what?

Re: EFI swap ??

I put a 95 LT1 in my 48 chevy. I sent a new tank to Rockvalley Auto parts in IL and they retofitted a pump assembly into my new tank. It works fine and was cheaper than a custome tank. I also was not a fan of mounting the fuel pump externally to the tank.

Here is the link

Good luck

Re: EFI swap ??

I'm on the same track !!
I have a old stock tank that I think I can retrofit a junk yard tank top only and pump into my stock tank. I see some cutting and welding of sheetmetal but nothing to extensive, and of course it must be air tight and the right depth............... looks good on paper!!!
Every time I go to the pick a part I see all the gas tanks in the trunk or on the ground next to the wreck, so I think I will take a closer look the next trip.

Re: EFI swap ??

If you look close at this pic you can see that Rock Valley basically welded in a tray to the top of the tank to drop the pump and return line into.

I forget how much it cost because it was some time ago.

Good luck
Marc

Re: EFI swap ??

You could weld a small sump on the bottom & run an in line walbro 255 or similar pump. Use the original feed as the return.

Re: EFI swap ??

In my shop class I made two external fuel tanks for cars and engines on engine stands, the high pressure pump are mounted outside the tank and easily run more than enough pressure to run the cars and engines I have.I had a problem with the in tank pumps setting for months at a time and the gas going bad and ruining the pumps.I got the pumps from car quest and they were about $150. My truck I am running a LT1 with a 97 S10 gas tank.

Re: EFI swap ??

The comments I hear the most here in the desert summer heat is that the pump must be in the tank for cooling and not external frame mounted

I haven't had a problem with desert heat in MO, just no common sense dumb___ hooking up the wires wrong and frying the pump

Re: EFI swap ??

I had a tank out of an 87 Buick Grand National, so I ordered a high output Walbro in tank pump. This tank has the internal baffling and the fuel pump hanger along with sending unit. I even had the tank straps so the install is pretty straight forward.
