Rod that is going to be hid when installed, what about using monofiliment to sew it? The plastic these are made from is not the greatest and the tear pretty easy at that location. I have one that is partially torn now. Another option is to buy a corvette boot, and using silicone slide it into yours. You will use the new boot's retainer but it will look like the original. Also when installing use really warm water to soften the retainer just before install as it will aid in the installation of of the belt. These if in bad shap can be tough to install without tearing in first place work slow and be careful.
