Re: Restored Auto Tilt Column

Excuse my ignorance. What is the difference between the van and truck tilt. Is it obvious? I put a tilt in my truck and think it was from a van and the only thing I had to change to make it work was the wiring in the column. The van one kept shorting out my lights as the configuration must have been different. Thanks

Pretty much obv... not really just a little research to do... Longer steer shafts on Vans... neutral switch position on underside of column... Here is an old school throwback courtesy of this site from like 2003.. That is why this forum rocks!!!

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=147927

lot of info here but everyone has their own way of going about things... The short could be a number of problems. I am not an electrician by any means...

Yeah... I was not trying to come off short with you... Just could be anything when it comes to electrical.. If all your switches and wires hooked up and compatible... kinda weird.. What did you mean by your lights shorting out??? Like blowing bulbs??? Or just sometimes working and sometimes not??? If not working sometimes could be your turn signal switch shorting stuff out now that I think about it...

I have parts for say...ummm.a few of them! Yes this is one and I have another blasted and painted up just needs assembled. Also just got another van tilt I thought it was a true truck tilt though!!! Should have looked it over better. Oh well. They all turn out great and bolt right in.

The first pic group is one, the second pics are another, with a third coming. I also posted the tilt I just got in it's own thread

The only difference between a truck tilt and van is the steering shaft length and the neutral safety switch placement on the outer steering collar itself. Som people are real anal when it come to it and others realize the only person that will ever know is themselves. I doubt anyone is going to get under a dash and be like "hey...that's not a true truck tilt. I modify them to bolt right in to trucks so they are in essence identical to a truck tilt besides the switch position. The vans are located about half way down the column and the trucks are a few inches from the floor.

Re: Restored Auto Tilt Column

The fact that van tilts were used many years later than '72 and had become more common makes truck columns worth much more than van tilts. So,price is one way to tell. There are those who demand true truck tilts and will pay the difference and there are those who are wiling to use van tilts, mostly because they are an economic alternative that appears the same from inside the truck. One way to tell,as with that second one,is by the flasher button and tilt knob being a later design,as well as the shorter shifter. But,a truck tilt could be rebuilt using these later pieces,so you have to go by the shaft end and neutral safety switch location. Your best bet is never assuming and ask the seller which it is.

These are all restored and modified van and/or rv columns. My other tilt is here... Not restored but very nice shape. And has correct red hazard knob...The intermediate shaft has been collapsed for shaft difference and will bolt right in to our trucks. It is all in excellent working order with nice chrome levers.
