Nice work on the front end. I'm taking notes for a future suspension upgrade on mine. Get the wrench in little man's hands ASAP.

The contrasting components look great. This is exactly where I'm at with my truck (re-assembly of front suspension), so this is the motivation I've been needing to get back to work on mine.

Thank you, That front suspension is a killer. Cross shafts are a pita! Next time I will just have to go aftermarket tubular arms.

Thanks, and welcome to the forum! Lots of great info and help around here.

Well since the last pics I realized something was wrong up front because the upper control arms contacted the spindle when the chassis was on jack stands and started a thread over in the suspension forum. Most said it is common to have to trim the upper control arm to eliminate the interference so that is what I did. I took about .25" off the control arm. I only needed maybe 1/16" or so but wanted to make sure there was no interference. Int the previous pics you can see the wad of blue tape at the contact point and in my first pic of this post this is how the fit now, much better!

I got some original rotors from my homeboy suspect since he went with big brakes. Thanks again buddy! Had them turned at Oreilley then sandblasted, painted with VHT silver, packed the existing Timken bearings and slapped in some new seals. Also sandblasted the steering gear box and idler arm bracket.

PS a smart guy would sandblast the rotors before having them machined.....

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

I replaced the wheel studs also. Put the rotors on and put the front wheels with bald tires on

I have to replace some hardware and wait for my new idler arm and pitman arm to arrive.. But it is now a ROLLER !!

Here are some "roller" pics

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

I have been playing around with the rear gas tank. Trying to figure a better way to mount it without notching the upper frame rail for the side fill. This is why the rear frame crossmember is removed in the pics. I think I finally decided to just notch the rail and mount it underneath. I will form up a notch out of 3/16 on Friday and get to working on mounting the tank for the last time...

The stance is great so far but I have a lot of weight to add before I see the real ride height. Looking about right though

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

It's almost a truck again! When I mentioned this before you were planning aftermarket arms, but if you didn't already do it, it isn't too late to do the caster mod. This is one of the best things I did for my truck and it will only take about an hour from where you are now. I don't even think you'll hurt the powdercoat.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=501241

I wouldn't be pushin this on you if I wasn't a huge fan of the mod and of your build!

Yeah I saw that before, it sounds good but if I ever have to put on another control arm shaft nut I am going to strangle someone depending on how long I keep this truck (you never know) it will get some upgrades. I decided to skip out on some suspension parts in favor of driving this thing someday soon.
And thanks for the compliment!

Thanks Kyle, congrats on the new venture!

Been working away on the gas tank notch. Grrrrr. I cut a piece of 3/16 and formed the ends up 45* and trimmed it down a bit since this pic. Should have this finished up this weekend.

You've come a long way since I last checked your thread. Looks good, really like the silver control arms, and I'll be copying you on that filler notch most likely! Great job.

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

I just went through your entire thread at work (shhh... don't tell my boss). You've done quite a bit of work. I do have one question, if you don't mind. When you did your exhaust cut out in the cross member, are the pipe sections you welded in necessary, or just preference? I ask because I think this is the route I'm going to go with, but seeing the wedge cut into the factory piece, I'm thinking it was meant to have a little flex, and the pipe doesn't allow for that. Maybe I'm over thinking it? Nice progress, and great job so far.

Thanks Jimmy, and thanks for the tip on the ECE backing plates. I have some out in the garage now.

Thanks for checking out my truck.

I agree with you that the welded in section of round tube is not really needed. If you take a look at the ECE crossmember and other aftermarket crossmembers it is just a cut out. My reasoning was we only had 4.5" round at work so that is what I used. With the 4.5" my cutout was on the edge of the radius of the bend so I thought welding in the reinforcement would be a good idea. Ideally I would like to have used 3.5" round with no reinforcement. I work with engineers all day so I understand the overthinking, I do it all the time. slows me down

I finished the tank notch and mounted the tank for the last time. I have been working on several other things and stocking new parts but the pic situation here is too much of a pain to post pics. I will try to sign up with photobucket in a while and try that out.

We have also been taking care of a few things with an insurance claim at the house too, new roof, gutters going up right now, I have to paint the back porch, garage door and overhangs and have a new shed built. This is taking up much of my "spare" time.

Ellie wants to post some smilies:

I love the picture from the back with the cab on the frame. Almost like looking at a womans backside. Great job with the fab of the notch.

Sexiness

Attempting to link through photobucket.

Trimmed the notch down getting ready to weld.

Welded in, smoothed out just a little bit.

Welded in with a little primer, it was raining on and off when I was trying to work

Another shot in primer. Not the prettiest welds. I need to buy a bigger welder soon. The Millermatic at work has me spoiled.
