Rebuilding a deluxe heater in a 62

So I am trying to undertake a big job for me. I love the classics and have had a few but I am really trying to do more myself so I can learn, so I can truly appreciate my vehicle and so I don't go broke. Long story short when I picked up my Suburban about 8 months ago the last owner took out the deluxe heater and installed an underdash heater with no defrost. The underdash heater is a cheaper plastic unit which does not look good, does not work well and I need defrost. So I have been on a mission to rebuild what was lost. Below are photos of what I have pulled together through the local pick n pull and other places. I know I am missing some parts but not sure if I am missing more than I can see and would love help on getting this back in. In my second picture you will notice my heater assembly is dented and damaged and missing the blower motor and fan so if anyone has one for sale I am looking. I am wondering if I should try to salvage the deluxe heater core or just buy a new one at LMC also. I did pick up a deluxe control heater set but I will need a resistor, a seal kit and a fan switch. Am I missing anything else? I have all the schematics, the shop manuals and factory assembly CDs and I am thinking of taking everything, hot tanking it all at my local shop, painting and trying like hell to get it all back together and working. I think I am looking for a clear path forward, suggestions on what I can re-use, an undented lower heater assembly (pic 2) and someone to kick me in the ass and say you can do this chicken shat. I bought most of my parts at Classic parts , they had a couple pages of heater parts ,knobs ,cables duct hose and heater control repair kit , now mine works like new...

I have one off my 65, in great shape just needs some paint, I stripped the truck a week after I got it home so not sure about the motor or condition of the core, PM me you info and I'll let you have it for the cost to ship

Your heater core has the Ranco valve installed on it. No one reproduces the valve or the core. What you have to do is get a standard core the same size and have the front and rear tanks taken off the old core and resodered to the new core. Just had the same problem a couple of months ago on my 63. Napa had the cheapest core, was around $35 and another $60 in tank work at the local radiator shop.

Hey 1963c-10 are you talking about the valve and core on mine or the setup that Towersddg9 is sending me? His actually looks more complete than what I have. Couldn't i just reorder the deluxe heater core like this from Classic Parts?

The picture of the heater core in this pic has the heater control valve mounted directly to the core. Its the little balck box to the left of the heater hoses and connected to the core. This valve & core combo are no longer made or reproduced. The valves can be rebulilt and the core can be replaced with the one in the pic above that you provided. The problem is that the heater valve is cable operated in the pic on this post....the core that you have in the post above does not have a cable operated heater control valve. you would have to install one or take the new core and have the old tanks taken off the old core and reinstalled. I just had to do the same thing to retain my dash operated 4 lever heater core control valve. Yours in the pic below looks complete except for the blower motor, and cage. The unit out of the 65 does not have cable operated heater control valve on the core, so I dont know if its a manual valve in the engine compartment how its operated. The dash is different, so Im not sure of the compatability of the units. There was a very good thread on all the differences in the heaters from 60-66 about two weeks ago. I found the post: Heaters. Check it out. There are alot of little differences in the different years

A few extra questions. If mine is incorrect can I just use the whole setup that Towersddg9 is sending me in post #3 above? Could I just get a new core from Classic Parts and get it to work with that one? I also have two distributor assemblies as you can see from the picture below but I am pretty sure I want to use the one that is cable operated so it works with my 4 level control valve. Maybe the other one I have is for a later year?

Have you tried the core that you have yet? If the valve and core work, I would use those. If the core is bad, it can easily be fixed as can the valve. I dont see why you couldn't use a core without the valve, but you would have to install a valve inline with the heater hoses to open /shut off the hot water into the core for warmer month driving. The units in post 8, the one on top is the corrct unit for 62-63 (maybe other years) and the bottom one is a newer unit (i believe 64-66). There are small changes (defroster duct and some different variants). Look at the thread: Heaters....will tell you everything about the differences.

Yes Burbluv definitely check out the Heater thread.Jonzcusomshop know a good bit about the differences in the heaters.
There is also a deflector that goes in behind the opening in the upper cowl.
AFAIK that is a '63 heater core,That valve ,I'm pretty sure,is a '63 only thing.
But Jonz knows all that stuff

The '64-'66's do not have a flow control valve at all, as equipped from the factory.
