Quick axle question

what axles came stock in 82 chevy k10's or gmc k1500? I know they have the 4:10 gears if im not mistaken, but they arent dana's correct?

Sorry im new to all this stuff

and would there be any need to uprade axles with a 4 inch lift and 35 inch tires because its too much stress on the gears or axle its self say if you were doing something like spinning the tires?

Re: Quick axle question

10 bolts front and rear. Don't be sorry, thats why you come to a forum. Everyone on this forum is extremely helpful and full of advise and experience.

I don't think you have a need to upgrade, unless you plan one wheeling it to death. My brother runs built 10 bolts with 35s and a 6" lift and has yet to break anything, but he is a scaredy cat about breaking stuff. How did you fit 35s with a 4" lift on a square body, trimmed fenders?

Is this your daily driver?

Re: Quick axle question

To the best of my knoweledge, your truck would of come with 10 bolt axles front and rear. The rear axle could also be the 12 bolt which is better than the 10 bolt. To identify your axles count the number of bolts on the diff cover. That will tell you what you have. You can source a 14 bolt full floater from any 73-87 3/4 ton GM truck and it will be a direct bolt on for your 1/2 ton truck. Just get a conversion ujoint for the rear driveshaft, this way you can keep your 1/2 ton driveline. The 10 bolt and dana 44 front axles are very similar in strengths. The only difference between a 1/2 10 bolt or a 3/4 ton 10 bolt is the hubs. You can convert your front axle from a 6 lug to a 8 lug by getting a new rotor and hub. The locking hubs are the same for both 10 bolt front axles whether it's a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. If you happen to get both the front and rear axles from 3/4 ton they will bolt in directly. No changes needed at all to front driveshaft as it it the same for 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton 4x4's. hope this helps you. Need any more info just ask.

Re: Quick axle question

I ran stock 3/4 ton axles on my 91 suburban which was 10 bolt front and semi float rear on 38s through the stock tbi 350/4l80/241 with 4.10s and beat on that front axle even slammed the front end down way too hard for the trucks own good but it was fine till I tried yanking a permanently stuck truck out about 15 times it then broke the passenger side inner/outer axle and u joint also broke the tow hook off the other truck
