Break in oil on 2nd change?

Hello Chevy truck forum members!

Edit: The project is a 1971 GMC 3/4 long box big window., the motor is a 87-95 chevy 350

After a few months of viewing this forum as a guest (and being helped a lot by the posts, thanks!) I recently joined and I have a first time engine building question.

The engine in question is a rebuilt 350 with roller every thing, so I'm not worried about cam break in, and with all the conflicting engine break-in info I've come up with a plan for break-in that should work for me.

I plan on using Edelbrock engine break in oil for the first step of break in as almost all the after market parts are edelbrock and it's a company I trust.

The question, After the first oil change I plan after 30-40 miles of break-in should I refill with the same break-in oil for the 2nd change? or go to high quality old school oil?

I'm thinking about using the Edelbrock break in oil for the 2nd fill. I guess my point is after the tender first break-in would a little less protection help or hinder the smoothing of machined parts?

any advice would be of great value to me

If its a roller cam, you really don't need to break it in, however, imo it never hurts to pamper your investment.

I have a 69 C20 converted to a C10 with a '92 4 bolt main good Wrench 350 that i just rebuilt with a complete Crower roller valve train, the council I got from the guys who are a lot smarter than me on this stuff say that break in oil for the first 100 miles then oil of my choice from then on Install a magnetic oil plug just in case. I am going to run Brad Penn oil in it for the life of the engine, Pennsylvania crude has long been tauted as being above average and is recommended by Crower. I like the fact that it is made right here in the USA and it is formulated for high rev engines. Not that I am going to be racing it that much but I like the fact that it is not going to be breaking down from any driving I will be doing.

Ok. That's close enough to the answer I was looking for. Break-in oil for 40ish miles and again for another 60ish. I don't mind changing the oil often because $60 is better than metal in the oil, but if it's over-kill I won't do it.

With a roller cam you still need to seat the rings. We used to tell people to change the break-in oil at 300-500 miles, which was mainly for allowing the additives to assist in seating the rings. Even with flat tappet cams the period for that is minimal, 20-30 minutes.

After the 300 mile period the break-in oil has done it's work and you are ready for regular oil.

You might call Edelbrock tech and ask their advice. They will know what the latest advice is.

Exactly!! Proper break in of the rings is essential and an often over-looked step.

Thank you all for your input!

The plan will be to use break-in oil for 500 miles regardless of how often I decide to change the oil. Then switch to a synthetic blend for another 500 then full synthetic for the rest of it's life.

I hope to unload photos of my project soon. I missed a lot of steps in it's progression though, and I need to find out how to upload photos on a forum.

Thanks again for solving my problem, i'd say case closed. Until some thing else creeps up!

Take a picture.

Crower does not recomend any of the synthetic brands, only the real stuff so that is what I am going with.
