1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

I've been following on this site forever looking at all the other builds and I've got far enough with my truck that I've finally decided to post up my own build finally. Other than taking it to the local transmission guy I've wrenched on this truck entirely on my own with my fathers aide as well as a few friends helping here and there throughout since my junior year of high school when my father bought it for me. Yes I've gotten into wrecks with it one being an older Toyota 4x4 (my buddies truck) using my front clip as a launch ramp and the other being the wheel separated from the truck on my way to a show. Even with all the downward spirals on this truck throughout our time building it to what it is now I still take the utmost pride in my first and only truck named Tweety for her yellow but renamed as project NewType for her current phase. But here is what I have so far I'm looking for any kind of criticism on it I don't mind truly and frankly it helps a TON but here is my story step by step enjoy youre reading and tell me what ya'll think. She's a daily driven showtruck and I always make sure to keep her on the road I'm not one to build a vehicle to just hide in a garage so yes there are some hokey things that probably ding this truck as a showtruck but she is what she is NewType was built for myself and my father and for others to enjoy or keep on walking either way this is my pride and joy for years to come.

I'm having a current issue with the dampener wobbling which in turn causes my pulley to wobble making my fan belt squeak i have a newer serpentine setup but this is the first of the issue to have arose since i started driving it two years ago anybody have an idea of how to fix something like that?

Either the balancer/dampener is separating (there is two pieces of steel with rubber inbetween them)
or it got loose and wallared itself on the crank. probably just the rubber separating. buy a new one at autozone or whoever and use the puller/installer tool (not a hammer) most parts stores rent them.

Hopefully its just the rubber separating then but I can already tell its gonna be a pain in the ass to get to it and pull it off being so close to the shroud itll be a nice sunday afternoon job haha.

Thank you Ive put alot of blood sweat and tears into it as Im sure everyone who has one knows. Ive got an original fender that ill be putting some hours of bodywork into as well as an inner fender for it too, (wheel and tire kinda fell off goin to a car show making my lowered 2wd suddenly a lifted 4wd for a second not a fun time at all) Couple weeks of work with powdercoating and assembly

Put a new belt on for the time being seems to have stop most of the irritating squeaking but I'm gonna save up and get me a balancer after my vacation trip then my next projects will be finishing the bodywork for my left fender, inner fender, tailgate and start installing my front sway bar my darn tire keeps finding the lip of the fender and cutting away at it damn thing.

Oh? No joke? Yeah we had em polished got rid of the bit of rashing they had and they look better than newer ones I get compliments everywhere on em kinda shame to get rid of my Rally's but I like the new look even joke with a guy I know he has a 4wd version and his wheels are skinnier than mine haha

Has anyone made the swap to a tank under the back of the bed I want a clean one preferably around 20 gallons so I can take the one outta the cab. If you have any lads it would be much appreciated to give me some ideas

Yeah you can bolt in a 71-72 blazer tank, they come in 2? different sizes and are available through any resto catalog for around $200 for a tank,sender and mount straps or through the vendors marketplace here by brothers trucks and others. If you use a blazer tank you will have to fab up a filler neck, most use some exhaust pipe and a few pieces of gas filler hose to get the filler cap where you want it, some in the bed floor, through a stake hole, on the inner bedside, or the outer bedside with a fuel door (puke). The other downside of the blazer tank is you have to cut out one of the bedsupports on the under side of the bed and I believe you need to trim one of the frame cross supports.
Another option is the first gen (67-69) camaro tank. you'll have to do a little fabricating there too but the filler neck will be behind the license plate so other than buying a flip down tag bracket at pull a part theres no mocking up a filler.

I havent found the blazer tank install how to yet. If you look at the very bottom of the page when you click on forums, there is a forum category called "FAQ" frequently asked questions, there is a lot of cool how to threads in there.

Or you can just pony up the money for a tank from that dang "fuelcellguy" with his fancy custom made aluminum tanks made to order between the rear frame rails however big or small you want. (yes I want one of his!!!)

Wow ton of different Ideas all kinds of different opinions myself on them I'd like the low profile look of the Camaro style but I'm concerned on all of them with how I'd run my exhaust it currently just dumps over the rear axle and I really love the look but having to move the tank will really limit my options back there. Thank you a bunch on the research forums I found the blazer one and was reading up on it but it hangs far too low for me to enjoy so I may just have to go the route of a ridiculously expensive tank haha. oh well the dream is always worth it right?

So I finally got to pull the front of my motor of and aside from the massive amount of oil that had already stained the ground from just sitting overnight I pulled my balancer off to find this beauty broken like half dome thus finalizing the balancer being the issue with my belt squeaking and wobbling. There was no sign of the Woodruff key and no front seal for my timing cover so off to Napa I went to grab some parts and Autozone doesn't stock anymore (btw since when do they NOT stock small block chevy parts it makes me wanna just shake a baby at their incompetence) end rant. We also picked up some JB weld to fill in the area that was worn away from the old key wobbling (yes I know I'm gonna get crap on that one but my new motor builder advised this was the way to go without pulling the motor apart for a new crank) So I'll be off to finish the job either today or tomorrow being as the JB Weld needed time to mold so I will post pictures of the finished project afterwards.

Wow ! thats some serious damage on the balancer. Never seen that before. They make a repair sleeve that goes over the snout of the crank but yeah if it wallared the keyway there aren't too may options other than pulling the crank. I've seen people put a small weld holding the key on the crank with a new balancer. If the balancer doesn't press on (too loose) I would definately use the repair sleeve. otherwise you gotta do what you gotta do to make it last untill you can get a new crank or engine built.

Yeah when I pulled it off I was fearing the worst thinking the front of my crank was gone but the JB weld did its job for now and the ttuck is sitting back at home again needs a new belt because I fried the old one getting it to the shop poor old balancer was wobbling like some old drunkard out of a bar and thats at an idle haha. But now I have to bleed my brakes again because the pedal goes to floor I swear if it's not one thing it's another oh well least it's semi drivable.

Hey all been awhile since I've updated I've finally been hired on to become a productive member of the U.S. work force again so I've had the chance to repair issues on the truck. Found out that my Master cylinder had been leaking from in internal of the booster so off to the store and put on a brand new one that makes the rest of my brake setup look trashy haha. So brakes were fixed changed the oil in the motor and found a belt that doesn't fly off with my serpentine setup since I found out that they make one with and without an air pump on the front of the motor. I'm going to be saving up now to make it more of a good looking truck by finishing the pain on the bed to match the flat black as well as do bodywork on my tailgate and new fender/inner so maybe I'll have a straight bodied truck again. Fingers crossed to be ready for Graffiti weekend this June where I live. Will also design a drawing of my finished product that I'm getting ready for. Thank you all for checking my progress so far

Finally got some pictures now of the new master cylinder and also my freshly powdercoated sway bar a brilliant Chevy red with black brackets and lowered mounts for the kit pretty excited to put this OEM bar on to see the look it'll give hopin I get some time this weekend. I've also been looking at a rebuilt 700R tranny to put in my truck to get some more gas mileage and top end out of the motor since it practically screams by the time it hits 65 haha give me some feedback on anything you see here thanks.

Good stuff...do you have the TH400? I'm thinking about doing a swap that involves a more powerful engine and either a built auto trans, or something like a built t56...I know what you mean

No Im just box stock with a turbo 350 a clean get around town setup but I'm driving it daily I'd love to get more mileage out of it with it having brand new suspension (might as well use it right? haha) but I've heard the jump from 11-13 to possibly 14-17 MPG just by the overdrive and that drives me at work to get that in as soon as I can

Got my sway bar on today handles a ton better and nearly bolted right on just had to knock the rivets out of the crossmember so the brackets could fit. Other than that super clean fit and finish and you can see just a bit of it underneath the truck as it sits.

As of today I have (ironically) 72 days to finish all of my projects being.... disassemble the wood bed for powderprime, Paint the entire shortbed to match the truck, add the red along the bottom, powderprime the tailgate and left fender, powdercoat the inner fender for left side and the add in the newly wired speakers and amp. So does anybody have any ideas on the wood bed I have for disassembly? I'm curious if it'll twist easy having no support and be a pain to put back together?
