dumb question :|

my truck has a 350 in it. tonight coming home it started knocking real bad. i think shes gettin tired of having 8 connecting rods. so my question, and i am sure the answer is here somewhere but its late, im tired. i have a 283 sitting in my wheelbarrow. (long story) will the accessories from the 350 bolt onto the 283? like the starter, and the intake manifold. my truck is a 69 gmc 3/4 ton with the automatic tranny. basically can i just yard the 350 out, pull all the bits off it and bolt them onto the 283 and drop it in? then rebuild the 350.

Yes, but maybe no. Now that this is cleared up let me 'xplain something. The earlier v-8 chevys did not have the bolt holes in the heads to accept the type brackets that you have on your 350. If the heads have bolt holes on the front to take the alt. braket and so forth, you are cleared for take off[ takeout?] But if the heads are blank on the front you may have some issues . I have run into this on my 70 swb that I was going to add the power steering to it and when the older 327 motor was put in it was the type that did'nt have the acc bolt holes so, I have'nt resolved that issue yet. Now, about the stupid question I don't think there are any stupid questions. How else do we learn? Maybe the only stupid question [if there is one] is the one that goes unasked. Hope this helps

Pull the heads off the 350 and put them on the 283 temporarily.

this racket really sounds like its coming from the exhaust. like something is loose and its banging around.

i'd check simple first like harmonic ballancer and flexplate/flywheel tightness and broken motor mounts

the general consensus seems to be flywheel or something else. i believe the rod has been ruled out, as a rod is generally quiet under load and makes racket off load.

Had a similar knock once, thought I lost a rod but it kept running -- good thing b/c I was duck hunting a couple hundred miles or so from home. Turned out to be a cracked flexplate. Good luck with yours!

Ive had bad fuel pumps that sounded like a rod knock. Another thing to check before you pull the whole motor. Sometimes you can pinpoint a noise like that with a stick. Touch on diffrent places while holding it up near your ear. The head bolt thing depends on which alternater brackets you are useing i think drivers side mount you will be ok. I had a 283 I put in my 61 apachie and I used the passangers side bracket like on a camaro or nova that bolts to the newer style water pump. You needed a long bolt that went all the way through the bracket then the alternater and a bushing into the head but there was no head hole. so I left out the bushing and used a shorter bolt with a nut. it was fine ,ran that way for years no problem. good luck hope you get it figured out.

Depends on the 350 heads...
The larger chamber 350 heads will yield a compression ratio of around 7:1, and the chambers will overlap the 3.875 bore of the 283. neither are the best of situations....

my rod experience was coming home from school in my 72 (a few years back...) and I kept wondering what that light clanking was in the car that was running down the highway next to me, then the next car had the same clanking, and so on by the time I made it home, it was BANG BANG BANG BANG - but made it to the driveway. New rod bearings, and unfortunately, a new crank (waaa) and 3 days later and good as new. So, moral of the story - if it was a rod, it'd probably be getting worse and worse fairly quickly. Once you spin a bearing and the rod starts a slappin, it only gets worse and worse - so I think you have correctly ruled out the rod. Whew...!

ok i think i have tracked it down. the flywheel looks good, by the way, i took a good look at it today. apparently the passenger side muffler has a broken baffle in it, i can see the muffler itself popping in and out, bang bang bang bang. there is no crossover tube either. so i bet if i cut that muffler out and replace it, the banging sound will go away. and install a crossover tube.
