Timing cover question

I've got a 55 235 from a car in my driveway and thinking about removing the timing cover to drill the holes to set it in my 54 pickup and was wondering if there were any hidden bolts to removing it, requiring an oil pan pull or not? Would hate to get it most of the way off only to find I had to get an oil pan gasket and spend the time pulling it too.

Re: Timing cover question

It's not the timing cover that has to be drilled but the plate that goes behind it. To get that off you have to either remove the cam or remove the cam gear.

Ebay item but it explains how the bolt go through it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1938-1953-CH...sories&vxp=mtr

That may not be the right one for your engine though and it is just shown as an example to go by to show how it mounts.

Re: Timing cover question

The t/cover has 2 hidden bolts inside the crankcase so the pan has to be removed to gain access.

The timing gear is pressed onto the cam, so the cam has to come out to get to the plate your after. This requires the side covers, oil tube, valve cover, rocker shaft, push rods and lifters to be removed.

Get yourself a factory service manual form one of the parts suppliers like http://www.fillingstation.com

Re: Timing cover question

Eff that, if I am stuck using this engine (unless I can find a nice running truck 235) I'll just lift the motor up and drill the 2 holes in the bottom plate using the diagram on Stovebolt.com.

Re: Timing cover question

Thats what I'd do. I'd lay it over on its side, easier to drill sideways.
